Easy Homemade Lavender Lotion
Learn how to make your own pumpable homemade lavender lotion! It will leave your skin feeling so soft and smooth and smells incredible!
There’s something so satisfying about creating your own skincare products. I’ve been making mine for years now and I love learning new recipes.
Not only can you ensure they are free from harmful chemicals, but you can also customize them to your liking.
Lavender lotion, in particular, is a fantastic DIY project due to its soothing and skin-nourishing properties.
I’ve always wanted to try making pumpable lotion, but I was scared about the water content. I’ve made lavender body butter before, but I wanted a liquid lotion.
With Simply Earth’s DIY Natural Lotion Kit, it showed me exactly how and I was able to easily make my own. Now I’m hooked!
Making your own lavender lotion has never been easier! Here is how to make a liquid lavender lotion.

Why Make Your Own Lotion?
Store-bought lotions often contain artificial fragrances, preservatives, and other chemicals that can actually irritate the skin.
By making your own lotion, you have complete control over the ingredients, ensuring they are safe and natural.
Plus, DIY lotions are eco-friendly and can save you money in the long run. It’s a win-win for both your skin and the environment.
I found that store bought lotions made my hands more dried out than before. When I made the switch to homemade lotions, my hands stayed smooth and hydrated far longer!

Benefits of Lavender Lotion
Lavender essential oil is a powerhouse ingredient with numerous benefits. Here are some of them:
- Soothes and Calms: Perfect for irritated or sensitive skin.
- Relieves Stress: The calming aroma of lavender helps reduce anxiety and promotes relaxation. (Check out these other essential oils for anxiety)
- Hydrates and Nourishes: Combined with the oils and butters in the kit, lavender provides intense hydration for dry skin.

How to Make Homemade Lavender Lotion
Creating your lavender lotion with Simply Earth’s kit is as easy than you think. Here’s how to make your own homemade lavender lotion:
Use scissors to trim the straw of the pumps to fit into the 8 oz bottles. Set aside.
Create an ice bath by filling a large bowl with ice. Set aside.
Add the distilled water and vegetable glycerin to a glass measuring pitcher or similar heat-proof container. Make sure the container is large enough for the oil mixture and the immersion blender to fit.
In a separate glass measuring pitcher or similar heat-proof container, add the emulsifying wax, cetyl alcohol, and sunflower oil.

Fill the bottom of a large pot with about 2 inches of water. Set both jars from steps 3 and 4 into the pot (do not pour the mixtures into the pot, place both jars into the pot to be heated). Use a medium-low heat to heat both mixtures until the oil mixture is melted.
Once the oil mixture is melted and both mixtures are similar temperatures (around 155°F), remove them from the heat.
Place the immersion blender into the water mixture. Turn the blender on a slow speed. While blending, pour the oil mixture into the water mixture. Continue to mix for about 1 minute until it’s just combined (overmixing the lotion can create foam in the lotion).

Set the lotion container into the ice bath and stir the mixture by hand. The lotion will be quite thin at first, but will slowly thicken as it cools. Continue to stir by hand until the lotion reaches room temperature.
In a small bowl, add the essential oil and Geogard preservative. Stir to mix. Pour a small amount of the lotion (about 1/4 cup) into the bowl and stir the lotion, preservatives, and essential oils together.

Pour the mixture from step 9 into the larger mixture of lotion and stir until fully combined.

Pour the lotion into the pump bottles and label. The lotion will continue to thicken for 24 hours.

Notes
- I highly suggest using a thermometer to make sure it is the right temperature. I didn’t the first time I made it, and my water and oils didn’t mix. When I used it the next time, it worked perfectly!
- You can use other essential oils, but I loved the lavender lemon mix.
- This does use a preservative to extend the shelf life. You don’t have to use the preservative, but then it will only last a few months or so.

Shelf Life of Homemade Lavender Lotion
Because it uses a Geogard ECT Preservative, the shelf life is around a year. If it changes color or smell, discard and make a new batch.
From my research, this preservative is a great natural option!
