Sea Moss
Sea moss, which is sometimes called “Irish Moss” or “Irish Sea Moss”, is a species of red algae that has been used for centuries and for good reason. Sea moss is rich in sulfur and has high mineral content.
I love using it to make a sea moss sugar scrub and sea moss gel.
It contains a lot of healthy nutrients, essential minerals and vitamins like vitamin k, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and a long list of others.
It has anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe and soften skin while giving you a natural glow.

How to Make Sea Moss Soap Without Lye
Add the sea moss to a bowl of filtered water. Make sure it is completely covered so that all of moss is able to soak. Let it sit for 48 hours at room temperature. It will expand and get soft as it sits.
Once the sea moss has set for 48 hours and it is soft, drain the sea moss and add it to a blender with more filtered water. Blend the water and the sea moss until you get a mixture that is nice and smooth.
Cut up the melt and pour soap base into small squares.
Melt the soap base pieces in the microwave on low heat for 30 seconds at a time. Stir in between microwave cycles until the pieces are completely melted.
Wait until it has cooled down a bit and add in 2 to 3 tablespoons of sea moss gel. Mix thoroughly.
If you want to add in some mica powder to color the soap, you can do this now. Add a teaspoon at a time until you get the desired color you want.
Then, pour the soap into your mold. Wait a few hours or overnight until it is hard. Take out of your mold and enjoy!
Notes
- You can add essential oils if you want. Choose a nice refreshing scent, lavender essential oil is a popular one, or you can add any of your favorite oils.
- The gold mica powder is optional and is used to color the the homemade soap. I added about a teaspoon to make the orange color similar to sea moss.
- You will want a high power blender to help you grind up the sea moss, otherwise it might be grainy.
