Easy DIY Shower Cleaner Recipe
Learn how to make this super easy DIY shower cleaner! There are so many benefits of making your own homemade shower cleaner
Keeping the bathroom clean can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to tackling soap scum, grime, and mold in the shower.
Depending on where you live, mold will grow like crazy. I am in the Pacific Northwest, and we are constantly cleaning everything from our bathroom, shower, and windows to keep the mold away. It is exhausting!
While there are numerous commercial cleaners available, many of them contain harsh chemicals that can be harmful to both your health and the environment. I can’t stand the smell of most of them as they include bleach.
So, I learned how to make my own homemade bathroom shower cleaner. It is made with natural ingredients and is quite eco-friendly too!
Here is your guide on how to make your own shower cleaner, the benefits of using a daily shower spray DIY, and the best tips and tricks for getting the most out of your new cleaner!
Benefits of Homemade Daily Shower Spray Cleaner
Like I mentioned above, there are tons of benefits of making your own homemade daily shower spray, but I wanted to list a few of my favorite reasons why I make my own:
Environmentally Friendly Ingredients
One of the primary benefits of DIY shower cleaners is that they typically contain environmentally friendly ingredients.
Most homemade shower cleaner recipes utilize common household items such as vinegar, baking soda, water, and essential oils.
These ingredients are biodegradable and pose minimal risk to aquatic life when they enter the water system, unlike many commercial cleaners which contain chemicals that can be harmful to aquatic ecosystems.
Plus, you will be using a reusable glass spray bottle, which reduces plastic in your home as well!

All-Natural Cleaner
Shower cleaners you find at the store often contain harsh chemicals such as ammonia, bleach, and synthetic fragrances, which can irritate the skin, eyes, and respiratory system.
My lungs are not the best and cannot handle bleach at all. I needed to make my own DIY shower cleaner for mold and mildew because it was impossible to find one that was truly non-toxic.
Making your own bathroom cleaner means that you can make it safe for the entire family!
Cost-Effective Solution
Another advantage of homemade shower cleaners is that they are so cost-effective!
The ingredients needed to make these cleaners are typically inexpensive and readily available at grocery stores or online.
By making your own cleaner, you can save money in the long run compared to purchasing commercial products.
It will probably take less than $5 total to make this DIY shower cleaner, and will have tons of leftover ingredients to remake it time and time again!

Effective Cleaning Power
Despite being made with natural ingredients, homemade shower cleaners with vinegar are highly effective at removing soap scum, mineral deposits, and mildew from shower surfaces.
Vinegar, for instance, is acidic enough to dissolve mineral buildup, while baking soda acts as a gentle abrasive to scrub away grime.
When combined with hot water and essential oils with antimicrobial properties, such as tea tree oil or lavender essential oil, these ingredients create a powerful cleaning solution that leaves your shower sparkling clean.
Versatility
With this recipe for shower cleaner, it is not only suitable for cleaning showers but can also be used to clean other bathroom surfaces, such as sinks, countertops, and tiles.
It can really be an all-in-one solution for maintaining a clean and hygienic bathroom environment. You might even be able to use it in the kitchen and other household areas too!

Tips and Tricks
Here are some hacks to get the most out of your homemade shower cleaner:
- Use a Shower Squeegee: After each shower, quickly wipe down the shower walls and glass doors with a shower squeegee to remove excess water and prevent mineral buildup. This will help extend the time between deep cleanings with your homemade shower cleaner.
- Apply the Cleaner Before Showering: For an easy way to tackle soap scum and grime, apply the shower cleaner to the surfaces before taking a shower. The steam and moisture from the shower will help activate the cleaner, making it easier to wipe away dirt and stains afterward.
- Add Essential Oils: Enhance the cleaning power and aroma of your homemade shower cleaner by adding a few drops of essential oils with antimicrobial properties, such as tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil, or lemon oil. Not only will these oils help kill bacteria and fungi, but they’ll also leave your bathroom smelling fresh and inviting.
- Reuse Old Toothbrushes: Don’t throw away old toothbrushes—repurpose them as scrub brushes for hard-to-reach areas in the shower, such as grout lines, corners, and around fixtures. The bristles of a toothbrush are perfect for agitating stubborn dirt and grime.
- Prevent Mold with Shower Spray: To prevent mold and mildew growth in your home, use this shower cleaner on places you find mold. Vinegar’s acidic nature helps inhibit mold and mildew growth, keeping your shower and home fresher for longer.
- Use a Microfiber Cloth: When wiping down surfaces with your homemade shower cleaner, use a microfiber cloth instead of paper towels or regular cloths. Microfiber cloths are more absorbent and have finer fibers that trap dirt and bacteria, leaving surfaces cleaner with less effort.
- Multi-Purpose Cleaner: Your homemade shower cleaner can double as a multi-purpose cleaner for other areas of the bathroom, such as countertops, sinks, and toilet exteriors. Simplify your cleaning routine by using one solution for multiple tasks.
- Regular Maintenance: Consistency is key to keeping your shower clean. Establish a regular cleaning schedule and stick to it to prevent dirt and grime from building up. A few minutes of maintenance each week will save you time and effort in the long run. Some prefer to use this as a daily shower cleaner!
By incorporating these hacks into your cleaning routine, you can maximize the effectiveness of your homemade daily shower cleaner and enjoy a sparkling clean bathroom with minimal effort.
