Plantain is an incredibly versatile herb that has tons of great medicinal properties.

I remember during my girl camp years as a teenager, whenever we would go hiking or on nature walks, we would point out plantain.

While it is best used fresh, you can also use some dried plantain leaves to make a plantain leaf oil and salve to help with your skin issues if you don’t have access to fresh plantain.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to make plantain salve, infused oil, and all the incredible benefits of this powerhouse plant!

Understanding Plantain

Plantain, often overlooked as a mere weed in many gardens, is an incredible herb.

Native to Europe and Asia, it has spread across the globe and can now be found in various forms, with its broad, ribbed leaves being the most recognizable feature.

The plant contains bioactive compounds, including allantoin, aucubin, and mucilage, which contribute to its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties.

Plantain Salve Benefits

Here are some of the top plantain oil benefits that you can enjoy when making a homemade plantain salve:

Skin Healing and Regeneration

Plantain has a remarkable ability to promote skin healing and regeneration. The presence of allantoin, a compound known for its cell-proliferating properties, accelerates tissue repair and regeneration.

When applied as a salve, plantain can aid in the healing of cuts, scrapes, and minor wounds, making it an excellent addition to your first aid kit.

Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Plantain salve is a potent anti-inflammatory agent, making it effective in soothing irritated skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis.

The combination of bioactive compounds helps to reduce redness, swelling, and itching, providing relief for those suffering from inflammatory skin disorders.

Antimicrobial Properties

The antimicrobial properties of plantain make it an ideal ingredient in salves designed to combat infections.

Whether dealing with minor cuts or insect bites, applying plantain salve can create a protective barrier against harmful microorganisms, reducing the risk of infection and supporting the body’s natural healing processes.

Relief from Burns and Sunburns

Plantain salve’s cooling and soothing properties make it a valuable remedy for burns, including sunburns.

Applying the salve to affected areas can provide relief from pain, reduce inflammation, and contribute to the healing of damaged skin.
