Easy 3-Ingredient DIY Hair Mask for Oily Hair

Learn how to easily make this DIY hair mask for oily hair at home. It will help your hair be healthy, strong, and glowing once again!

Oily hair tends to lay limp and flat against the head, clumps together, and often looks dirty, even when freshly washed. If you have fine hair, you may have more of a problem with oiliness than others.

Unfortunately, after giving birth, my fine blonde hair became super oily. No matter what shampoo I tried, nothing seemed to make it better.

I hated that my hair was greasy, but I thought all was lost. I gave up hope for a few years.

However, I learned there are plenty of home remedies and natural options to try and I finally got my healthy, non-oily hair back!

Here I want to share the best homemade hair mask for oily scalp to hopefully help you too!

Why Do I Have Oily Hair?

Oily hair is the result of overactive sebaceous glands near the surface of the scalp at the base of each strand of hair.

These glands secrete sebum, a mixture of fats and other substances that normally keep your hair and scalp from drying out.

Hormonal changes, such as when you are going through puberty, postpartum, or menopause, and anything that affects the balance of hormones in your body, such as stress or hormonal medication, can make your hair oily.

Genetics, poor air quality, hot weather, humidity, and a bad diet can all contribute to a problem with oily hair.

Negative Effects of Oily Hair

Oily hair looks greasy and can also lead to dandruff and other scalp problems, such as acne-like breakouts on the scalp and even hair loss.

Sebaceous glands are found everywhere under your skin, so it is very easy to transfer oils from your face to your hair and from your hair to your face–from wearing bangs, for instance. This could cause or aggravate acne breakouts.

Benefits of Homemade Hair Mask

Using a greasy hair mask that combines honey, shea butter, and coconut oil can offer several benefits for oily hair, despite their rich and moisturizing properties.

Here’s a breakdown of how each ingredient can be beneficial for your hair:

Honey

  1. Natural Humectant: Honey helps to balance the moisture levels in your hair by attracting and retaining moisture without making it greasy.
  2. Antibacterial Properties: Honey’s natural antibacterial and antiseptic properties can help keep the scalp clean and reduce the risk of scalp infections that might exacerbate oiliness.
  3. Nourishing: Rich in vitamins and minerals, honey can nourish the scalp and hair, promoting overall hair health and potentially reducing excessive oil production as the scalp becomes healthier.

Shea Butter

  1. Moisturizing Without Clogging: Shea butter is highly moisturizing but does not clog pores, which can be beneficial for balancing the scalp’s oil production.
  2. Rich in Nutrients: It contains vitamins A and E and essential fatty acids that nourish the scalp and hair, potentially helping to regulate oil production by keeping the scalp healthy.
  3. Anti-inflammatory Properties: Shea butter can soothe an irritated scalp, which can help reduce excess oil production caused by scalp irritation.

Coconut Oil

  1. Deep Conditioning: Coconut oil penetrates the hair shaft deeply, providing intense conditioning. For oily hair, it’s important to use it in moderation to avoid making hair too greasy.
  2. Antimicrobial Properties: Coconut oil has natural antimicrobial properties that can help keep the scalp healthy and free from fungal infections, which can sometimes cause excessive oiliness.
  3. Strengthening: It helps to strengthen hair and prevent breakage, which can improve the overall condition of the hair and scalp, potentially leading to a more balanced production of sebum.

As always, some ingredients work better on some hair and don’t for others. Be sure to try out a little to see if this DIY hair mask for greasy hair works for you!

DIY Hair Mask for Oily Hair Recipe

Here is how to easily make this homemade mask for oily hair:

Supplies

Instructions

Melt the refined shea butter. You can melt this on the stove using a double boiler.

I used the microwave. It takes about a minute and a half, at 30 second intervals, checking to see when it is fully melted as microwaves are at different strengths.

Add the honey and coconut oil to the melted shea butter.

Stir the mixture together and transfer to an airtight container.

Let sit in the refrigerator for about 3 hours or until hardened. This does not need to stay in the refrigerator after being hardened.

How to Use Hair Mask

I use about a teaspoon of the mixture after washing my hair. I wash the rest of my body and then rinse the mixture with apple cider vinegar.

Technically, this does not need to be washed out of your hair as it can be used as a leave in conditioner. But my fine blonde hair didn’t do so well with it, especially on my scalp, so I always rinse it. Do what works best for your hair.

Tips for Success

  • For oily hair, use these ingredients in moderation and in balanced proportions. For example, use a small amount of coconut oil and more of honey and shea butter.
  • Apply the mask once a week or every two weeks to avoid over-moisturizing the hair.
  • Ensure you rinse the mask out thoroughly to prevent any residue that could make hair look greasy. Apple cider vinegar is a great rinse that can be used for oily hair!
  • I prefer to add some essential oils into my DIY hair mask to get more benefits. Tea tree, lavender, and rosemary are great oils for hair.
