DIY Sugar Cookie Lip Balm

I always smile when I catch the scent of vanilla and sweet orange together. It’s simple, nostalgic, and somehow smells just like sugar cookies baking in a warm kitchen, something that always makes me think of my grandma, holidays, and cozy moments.

This DIY sugar cookie lip balm recipe came out of that feeling. I wanted something that smelled like a treat but still nourished my lips through the dry, chilly months.

After playing around with a few combinations, this sugar cookie lip balm quickly became a favorite. It’s soft, soothing, and easy to make in a single quiet afternoon.

If you’re looking for a handmade gift or just something to tuck in your coat pocket, I hope this little balm brings the same comfort to you as it does to me.

Why These Ingredients Work

Every ingredient in this recipe plays a role, not just in making your lips feel better, but in offering a gentle, natural experience that’s safe and beginner-friendly.

  • Carrier oil (like jojoba, almond, or olive): Softens and protects the lips. I personally used vanilla infused oil.
  • Beeswax: Creates a barrier to lock in moisture and gives the balm its solid texture
  • Tallow: Deeply moisturizing with a light, creamy feel. I can’t do another lip balm without tallow!

  • Ground cinnamon: Adds a warm tint and mild plumping effect (optional and can be strained)
  • Vanilla essential oil (oleoresin or absolute): Brings a comforting, sweet aroma
  • Sweet orange essential oil: Bright, cheerful, and gentle on the skin

Vanilla and sweet orange are especially lovely together. They smell like sugar cookies without being overpowering and are both generally safe for lip use in small amounts.

Notes

  • You can strain out the cinnamon if you want a smoother texture, but I personally love the soft color and the faint spice it adds. I often make a batch of these with my kids around the holidays, and they love giving them to grandparents and teachers.
  • These are also lovely to pair with a small sugar cookie lip scrub or a beeswax candle for a thoughtful, natural gift.
  • If you don’t have tallow, you can use coconut oil.
