Homemade Gingerbread Body Butter
This time of year always nudges me toward the cozy things, simmering pots on the stove, cozy sweaters, quiet evenings, and of course, warm, homemade body butter.
There’s something so comforting about scooping a bit of fluffy, spiced cream into your hands and knowing exactly what’s in it.
This homemade gingerbread body butter has become a seasonal favorite in my home. It’s rich and moisturizing, with just the right blend of spice and sweetness to make your skin (and your mood) feel wrapped in warmth.
I made a DIY gingerbread sugar scrub and could not believe how amazing it smelled, so I had to make more with those ingredients!
Whether you’re keeping it for yourself or gifting it to someone you love, I’m sure it’ll become your favorite too!

The Benefits of These Warming Ingredients
This recipe uses ground ginger, cinnamon, and an essential oil blend that smells like freshly baked cookies. But beyond the scent, these ingredients carry some beautiful benefits:
- Ginger is naturally warming and stimulating. When used in skincare, it can help improve circulation and bring a gentle warmth to tired muscles.
- Cinnamon is known for its antimicrobial properties and adds a spicy-sweet aroma. It’s also stimulating to the skin, so a little goes a long way.
- Shea butter is deeply moisturizing, rich in vitamins A and E, and helps protect the skin’s natural barrier.
- Tallow is full of skin-loving nutrients and closely resembles our skin’s own oils, making it incredibly soothing and nourishing, especially in dry weather.
- Vanilla-infused oil adds a touch of sweetness and calm, perfect for winding down at the end of the day.
As always, make sure to do a patch test first, especially with spices like cinnamon and ginger. If your skin is very sensitive, you can reduce the amount or strain them out before whipping.

Homemade Gingerbread Body Butter Recipe
This makes about 6 to 8 ounces, just enough to keep one for yourself and gift one or two to a friend!
Ingredients:
- ¼ cup shea butter
- 2 tablespoons tallow
- 2 tablespoons vanilla-infused oil (or your favorite carrier oil)
- 1 tablespoon beeswax
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 45 drops gingerbread essential oil blend (or a combo of cinnamon, clove, ginger, and vanilla essential oils)

Instructions:
In a double boiler, gently melt the shea butter, tallow, vanilla oil, beeswax, ginger, and cinnamon until smooth.

Remove from heat and let it cool slightly until the mixture begins to solidify (about 30 to 45 minutes in the fridge).

Once it’s semi-solid, use a hand mixer or stand mixer to whip for 2 to 3 minutes until light and fluffy.
Add your essential oils and whip again briefly to blend everything together.

Spoon the butter into clean, airtight jars or tins. Store in a cool, dry place and use within 6 months.

Notes:
- You can swap out the oils based on what you have on hand. Sweet almond, avocado, or jojoba oil all work beautifully.
- If you prefer a smoother finish, strain out the ground spices using cheesecloth before whipping. I liked it in mine!
- I add the powders right away that way the benefits are slowly infusing to give more of their benefits. Sometimes I let it infused for a few hours on low before continuing with the recipe.
