DIY Tallow Hair Mask Recipe
If your hair has been feeling dull, dry, or just plain tired, you might want to try out this DIY tallow hair mask recipe!
It’s especially perfect for thick, curly, or damaged hair that needs a little extra support. And the best part? It only takes a few ingredients you might already have in your natural skincare stash!
I personally do not use hair masks very often, since I have fine, blonde hair. But, I used this on my daughter’s hard and it worked SO well! It was not greasy, but gave her hair shine and was so smooth for days!
Here is my simple homemade tallow hair mask recipe so you can make it too!

Why Tallow for Hair?
Beef tallow might not be the first thing you think of when it comes to hair care, but it’s rich in nourishing fats that are remarkably similar to the oils our skin and scalp naturally produce!
It’s full of fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K, all of which support skin and scalp health 🙂
When beef fat is whipped with castor oil (which supports hair growth) and essential oils like rosemary, you get a thick, buttery hair mask that soothes the scalp and deeply conditions every strand!
I prefer tallow from grass fed cows over coconut oil for hair and most of my DIY skincare recipes.
Note: This mask is rich and best suited for curly, coarse, or dry hair. If your hair is fine or oily, use sparingly or only on the ends.

DIY Tallow Hair Mask Recipe
Here is my simple hair mask recipe made with tallow and other natural ingredients!
Makes 4-6 oz
Ingredients:
- ½ cup beef tallow (learn how to render your own!)
- 2 tablespoons castor oil
- 15 drops lavender essential oil
- 15 drops rosemary essential oil

Instructions
Add your tallow to a clean mixing bowl. Using a hand mixer, whip until light and fluffy (like whipped cream!).

Slowly drizzle in the castor oil while continuing to whip. This helps the texture stay smooth and spreadable.

Add your essential oils and whip for a few more seconds until everything is evenly mixed.
Scoop into a clean jar with a lid. Keep in a cool spot to maintain the whipped texture.

Notes:
- If your mask melts in warm weather, just pop it in the fridge for a bit and re-whip.
- Rosemary essential oil is especially great for scalp stimulation and may help with hair growth!
- Works beautifully as a deep treatment for protective styles or post-summer sun repair. The nutrients in grass fed tallow will do some deep conditioning, so it is not for daily use.
How to Use:
- Apply a small amount to your scalp and massage it in.
- Work a bit through the mid-lengths and ends if your hair is especially dry.
- Leave on for 20-30 minutes, then shampoo thoroughly (you may need two washes).
- Use once a week or as needed.
- Can help with frizz and hair hydration.
