Homemade Christmas Candle
There’s something about lighting a candle during the holidays that instantly makes the world feel softer. When the house is quiet, the lights are twinkling, and a warm, comforting scent fills the air, it brings me right back to childhood.
Baking cookies with my mom, unwrapping ornaments, singing carols. Those little moments that stay tucked in your heart forever.
Now, one of my favorite traditions is making our own homemade Christmas candles. It’s such a peaceful, creative process, and it fills our home with scents that feel real, not artificial or overpowering, just beautifully festive.
If you’ve never made a candle before, don’t worry. This Christmas candle recipe is beginner-friendly, natural, and smells divine.

Why I Use Essential Oils Instead of Fragrance Oils
Many store-bought candles use synthetic fragrance oils, which can release harmful chemicals into the air. I switched to essential oils years ago, not only for the health benefits but because they smell so much richer and truer.
Making your own candle means you get to choose exactly what goes in and how it smells. Whether you want a “Christmas Tree” vibe or something more like “Candy Cane,” you can customize your candle to fit your favorite holiday memory.
I personally used a special Christmas blend from Far & Wild and it smells SO GOOD!

Homemade Christmas Candle Recipe
Makes one 7-ounce candle
Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups soy wax flakes
- 40 drops Winter Spice essential oil blend
- 1 tablespoon red candle dye
- 1 candle wick (cotton or wood)
- 1 heat-safe jar

Instructions
Fix your wick in the center of a clean, dry jar using a glue dot or a bit of melted wax.
Melt soy wax flakes and candle dye in a double boiler, stirring occasionally.

Once melted, remove from heat and let cool slightly to 125–130°F.
Add essential oils and stir gently to distribute.

Pour into your jar, holding the wick upright until the wax begins to set.

Let cure for 4-6 hours or overnight. Trim the wick to ¼ inch before lighting.

Tips & Notes
- Sometimes I’ll tie a little ribbon around the jar and gift one to a friend or neighbor. Handmade candles always feel so personal, and everyone appreciates a thoughtful, non-toxic gift.

Making your own candles is such a calming ritual, especially during the rush of the holidays. It gives you a chance to slow down, create something meaningful, and fill your home with the comforting scents of the season.
You don’t need a big workshop or a shelf full of supplies. Just a jar, a few natural ingredients, and a little time. That’s all it takes to turn a cold winter evening into something warm and beautiful.
