Infused with calendula’s soothing properties, shea butter’s deep hydration, and aloe vera’s skin-calming effects, this homemade shaving cream provides a smooth glide while nourishing the skin.

I have always struggled with pain after shaving and had super irritated legs, so I knew I had to change up what I was doing.

While sugar scrubs helped a lot, I needed more. I have been using calendula in so many things. So I figured if it is so healing in everything else, it should be for this too!

Why Make Your Own Calendula Shaving Cream?

Here are a few of my favorite reasons why I prefer to make my own shaving cream:

  • Gentle on Skin – Free from synthetic foaming agents and harsh chemicals that can dry or irritate sensitive skin. Store bought ones always made things worse for me with the parabens, sulfates, and synthetic fragrances.
  • Deeply Moisturizing – Coconut oil and shea butter hydrate and protect against razor burn.
  • Healing Properties – Calendula is known for its anti-inflammatory benefits, making it perfect for soothing the skin post-shave. My number one reason why I love calendula!
  • Customizable & Fresh – Use your favorite essential oils to create a personalized, refreshing scent. Sometimes I go for relaxing scents like lavender, other times I like seasonal like pine.

Benefits of Key Ingredients

Before I share the recipe, here are the benefits of the ingredients so you’ll understand why I chose these particular ones:

  • Calendula-Infused Oil – Soothes irritated skin and helps reduce redness.
  • Shea Butter – Deeply hydrates and forms a protective barrier against razor burn.
  • Coconut Oil – Softens hair for a smoother shave and prevents dryness.
  • Aloe Vera Gel – Naturally cools and calms the skin, reducing post-shave irritation. One of the best ingredients for this recipe!
  • Arrowroot Powder/Baking Soda – Helps create a creamy, non-greasy texture for easy application.

How to Make Calendula Shaving Cream

Here is my step by step process to make this DIY calendula shaving cream:

Step 1: Make the Calendula-Infused Oil

Add dried calendula flowers to a small glass jar.

Pour olive or almond oil over the flowers, fully submerging them.

Heat gently using a double boiler for a few hours or let it infuse naturally for 4-6 weeks.

Strain out the flowers and store the infused oil in a dark glass bottle.

Step 2: Make the Shaving Cream

In a double boiler or heat-safe bowl over simmering water, melt the shea butter and coconut oil together until fully liquid.

Allow the mixture to cool slightly. Once it starts to thicken but is still soft, use a hand mixer or stand mixer to whip it until light and fluffy.

mixing everything together

Gently mix in the aloe vera gel and calendula-infused oil until fully combined.

Add the baking soda and arrowroot powder and continue mixing.

Stir in your chosen essential oils and mix one last time. I did 6 drops of lavender essential oil and 6 drops of tea tree essential oil and loved that combo!

Notes

  • Store in a cool, dry place. If your home is warm, refrigerate to prevent melting. It will make it feel extra soothing on your skin!
  • For extra hydration, add 1 teaspoon of vitamin E oil.
  • For a cooling effect, use peppermint essential oil.
  • For antibacterial benefits, add tea tree essential oil.
