DIY Pumpkin Spice Lip Balm Recipe
I was so excited for Fall, I tried to make anything and everything I possibly could with Fall scents. I made a Autumn cleaner and of course, a room spray with Fall essential oils.
I’ve been making homemade lip balm recipes since around 2020, back when we were in our apartment and I was just starting to figure out this whole natural living thing.
It took some trial and error, but once I got the ratios down, I was HOOKED. There’s something really satisfying about knowing exactly what’s going on your lips, especially when you’ve got little ones borrowing your chapstick every time you apply it yourself (because that’s what mine do haha).
This DIY pumpkin spice lip balm smells incredible, it’s actually nourishing, and it doubles as the best little handmade pumpkin spice gift you can throw together in under an hour. Here’s how to make them yourself!

Benefits fir Your Lips
This natural pumpkin lip balm isn’t just a pretty for Fall! Every ingredient I chose for a reason:
- Tallow is one of those things that sounds weird until you try it. It’s rendered animal fat, usually beef, and it has a fatty acid profile that’s remarkably close to human skin.
Traditional cultures used it for skin care for centuries. It’s deeply moisturizing and absorbs really well, which makes it ideal for a lip balm you’re actually going to wear. It’s my favorite type of lip balm! - Jojoba oil is technically a liquid wax, not an oil, which means it mimics your skin’s natural sebum. It’s incredibly stable, doesn’t go rancid quickly, and is known for being soothing and conditioning. Great for keeping lips soft in fall when the air gets dry and cold.
- Beeswax is the structure of the whole thing. It creates that protective barrier on the lips, holds everything together, and has been used in traditional skin preparations for a long time.
- Ginger essential oil is warming and circulatory. Traditionally used to stimulate and invigorate, it gives this fall lip balm DIY a little tingly heat that feels really nice in cooler weather.
- Sweet orange essential oil is uplifting and gentle on skin. It adds brightness to the scent and has a long history of use in natural beauty products.
- Cinnamon leaf essential oil (not bark, leaf is much gentler) is warming, antimicrobial, and adds that classic spice note. I only add a drop or two because it is powerful!
- Nutmeg essential oil rounds out the whole pumpkin spice profile. It’s warming, earthy, and has traditionally been used for its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties.

DIY Pumpkin Spice Lip Balm Recipe
Makes: about 9-10 lip balms
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp tallow
- 2 tbsp jojoba oil (I did a vanilla infused oil!)
- 1 tbsp beeswax
- 3 drops ginger essential oil
- 2 drops sweet orange essential oil
- 1 drop cinnamon leaf essential oil
- 1 drop nutmeg essential oil
- Mica powder (orange, to your liking, totally optional)

Instructions
Combine the tallow, jojoba oil, and beeswax in a double boiler. Stir gently until fully melted and combined.

Remove from heat and let it cool for a few minutes. Then add in the essential oils.

If using, add in the mica powder, little bits at a time until you get your desired color (it doesn’t make your lips orange, don’t worry I tested it!)

Pour into lip balm tubes while still liquid.

Let it sit undisturbed until fully hardened, about an hour at room temperature.

Notes
- If you want a shinier finish, add castor oil instead.
- Coconut oil works instead of tallow.
- Essential oils are at a .5% dilution rate, making it safe for the lips 🙂
- If using with kids, I would take out the hot oils and just use sweet orange.

How to Use It
Apply directly to lips as needed throughout the day! This works especially well at night before bed since your lips do a lot of repairing while you sleep. If you have very dry lips, I suggest using my homemade overnight lip mask.
Store at room temperature away from heat and direct sunlight. Don’t keep it in your car. It’ll melt. I know from experience hah.
These will last several months, though they rarely make it that long around here. If you live somewhere warm, keep them in a cool drawer so they don’t get soft!
If you’re making these as handmade pumpkin spice gifts, some plain kraft label stickers and a simple hand-lettered name go a long way 🙂
