DIY Tallow Conditioner Bar Recipe
I still remember the first time I tried a conditioner bar from a fancy natural beauty shop, my daughter was a toddler, I was deep in my “let’s swap everything for something cleaner” phase, and I just could not get the hang of it!
It left my hair feeling oily and heavy, and I gave up. Fast forward a few years and a LOT of reading later, I finally understood why: the formula matters SO much.
When I started experimenting with tallow in my skincare recipes and saw how deeply it nourished my skin, something clicked.
What if I built a conditioner bar around it? What followed was honestly one of my favorite kitchen experiments, and this DIY tallow conditioner bar is now a staple in our bathroom.
Tallow has been used for centuries as a hair and skin treatment, long before the beauty industry convinced us we needed a shelf full of products. It mimics the natural oils our skin and scalp produce, which means it absorbs beautifully instead of just sitting on top 🙂
Paired with the right conditioning agents, it makes an all natural conditioner bar DIY that actually works. Whether you have dry ends, frizzy waves, or you’re specifically hunting for a homemade tallow conditioner bar for curly hair, this recipe is worth trying.
And yes, I made this in my kitchen with no special equipment beyond a basic double boiler setup. You can absolutely do this 🙂

Herbal Benefits
This DIY hair conditioner bar is packed with ingredients that I personally chose and formulated. Here’s why I chose every single one:
- BTMS-50 (Behentrimonium Methosulfate) is the backbone of any good DIY bar conditioner. It’s a plant-derived emulsifying conditioner that gives your hair that slippery, detangled feeling, the one that signals your conditioner is actually working! Without it, you’d just have a waxy lump.
- Cetyl alcohol is a fatty alcohol (not the drying kind!) that adds slip, softness, and helps the bar hold its shape. It makes your hair feel smooth and manageable without heaviness.
- Tallow is the star here, and honestly the reason I knew I had to share this recipe. Rendered beef tallow is rich in fatty acids that closely match what our own skin and scalp naturally produce.
It deeply nourishes dry, damaged hair and adds incredible shine! - Cocoa butter adds moisture and a light protective coating to each strand. It also helps the bar stay firm and gives it that subtle, chocolatey scent (my favorite part!!).
- Argan oil is liquid gold for hair, rich in vitamin E and essential fatty acids, it smooths frizz, adds shine, and is especially wonderful for a DIY conditioner bar for curly hair or anyone with coarser textures.
- Essential oils are optional but lovely. Lavender and rosemary are my go-tos. Both have long traditions of being used to support scalp health and healthy hair growth.
I choose to use a preservative in this recipe, just because the conditioner bar is staying in my shower area where water in present.

DIY Tallow Conditioner Bar Recipe
Makes: 2 bars if using same mold
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons BTMS-50
- 1 tablespoon cetyl alcohol
- 1 tablespoon tallow
- 1 teaspoon cocoa butter
- 2 teaspoons argan oil
- 8 drops lavender essential oil
- 7 drops rosemary essential oil
- Geogard ECT preservative (16 drops in total)
- Silicone mold

Instructions
Add the BTMS-50, cetyl alcohol, tallow, cocoa butter, and argan oil to a heat-safe container.

Melt gently using a double boiler until smooth.
Remove from heat and let cool slightly.

Stir in essential oils and preservative if using.

Pour into silicone molds. Let harden fully overnight.

After shampooing, rub the bar between your hands or directly onto wet hair. Focus on the mid-lengths and ends, leave on for 1-3 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

Notes
- Allow the bar to dry completely between uses to extend its life.
- This recipe is water-free, so a preservative is optional but recommended since the bar will be used in a wet environment!
- I actually used a rosemary infused argan oil and it was SO nice, but regular argan oil works.

How to Use It
Use this DIY conditioner bar after shampooing, always on wet hair. Rub it between your palms to warm it up, then work it through your mid-lengths and ends.
Avoid the roots if you have fine hair that gets weighed down easily. That’s what I do! Leave it on for 1-3 minutes, then rinse well.
Store it on a soap dish or small rack between uses so it can dry out completely. Trust me, I figured that out the hard way when my first bar turned soft and mushy sitting in a puddle of shower water!
