DIY Fall Room Spray Recipe

Fall is my absolute favorite season. I LOVE the smells that fall brings, so I try to keep it in the air as much as I can (even sometimes in the summer hah).

I made a fall simmer pot that I use, but in times when I want just a quick refresh, I knew I needed to make a DIY fall room spray too.

I started digging through my essential oils looking for something I could put together that reminded me of fall, and after a few trial and errors, I did it! This autumn room spray recipe is the one I’ve made over and over since then 🙂

This DIY fall room spray uses a simple base of witch hazel and distilled water with a layered blend of fall essential oils that together smell like a warm spiced candle, but without synthetic fragrance! I’ll walk you through how to put it together in about five minutes.

Benefits

This isn’t a medicinal recipe, but the oils in here aren’t random. Each brings the fall scent but also some benefits to you as well:

  • Cedarwood has been used for centuries in traditional practices for grounding and calm. It’s earthy and woody and it forms the backbone of this blend.
  • Sweet orange is one of those oils that just lifts a room instantly. It’s bright and citrusy and uplifting, and it balances all the heavier spice notes and is known to help uplift your mood and bring peace and calming.
  • Clove bud is POWERFUL. A little goes a long way, and it’s been used traditionally for warmth and as a natural preservative in many cultures.
  • Nutmeg adds a softer, almost baked-goods quality that I love. Cinnamon is the heart of any autumn room spray recipe worth making, but it’s also a hot oil, so it’s used sparingly here.
  • Pine rounds everything out with that crisp, cold-air feeling that makes the whole blend smell like fall outside AND inside at the same time!
  • Witch hazel (or vodka) helps the oils actually disperse in water instead of just floating on top 🙂

DIY Fall Roomy Spray Recipe

Makes: 8 ounce spray bottle

Ingredients

Instructions

Add all the essential oils to the witch hazel or vodka.

Pour into the glass bottle and swirl to mix. Top off with distilled water, leaving a little room at the top.

Shake well before each use.

Notes

  • Clove and cinnamon are hot oils, so this blend is for room spraying only, not for skin or fabrics that touch skin often (like pillowcases).
  • Shake well before every use since the oils will separate from the water. Or, you can use a natural solubizer to help with that.
  • Store away from direct sunlight to help the scent last longer!
  • Avoid spraying directly on wood furniture or fabrics that could stain, just to be careful 🙂
  • For a lighter version, cut all essential oil amounts in half.

How to Use It

Shake the bottle well every single time before you spray. A few spritzes into the center of a room, toward the ceiling so it mists down, works better than spraying low near furniture.

This is GREAT for entryways, living rooms, and kitchens. I spray it before guests come over and also just for myself because I deserve a nice-smelling house on a Tuesday!

Avoid spraying on upholstered furniture or anywhere the oils might leave a residue. Stored in a cool dark spot, it should last a couple of months easily.

If you have babies or very young toddlers, be careful as cinnamon and clove are hot oils.

Final Thoughts

I’ve made this as a DIY home fragrance fall gift a few times now, tucking a little bottle into a basket with some other handmade things, and people ALWAYS ask for more!

It’s the kind of scent that makes a house just smell good. It always brings a huge grin to my face.

Next time I want to try swapping the pine for fir needle and see if it shifts toward more of a deep-woods feeling. When winter comes arounds, try my Christmas room sprays too!

If you’ve been wanting to make your own homemade fall room spray but felt like it was complicated, I hope this shows you how simple it actually is. Let me know if you try it! 🙂
