My kitchen used to smell like lemons basically year-round. Which, I do love. But every fall I’d walk into a shop or someone’s house and catch that warm, woodsy, spiced smell and think… why doesn’t my house smell like THAT when it’s clean?

I have my DIY fall room spray that I LOVE, and then I had an idea: why not use that smell with my homemade cleaning spray? And it WORKED!!

A cleaner that actually works AND smells like an October afternoon. It took me a few tries to get a blend I liked (early versions were way too cinnamon-heavy, which is a lot when you’re scrubbing a counter at 7am), but I finally landed on this one and I haven’t looked back 🙂

This DIY fall cleaner spray uses a handful of essential oils to create that layered, seasonal scent you actually want filling your home, without synthetic fragrance or anything that makes me nervous around the littles.

I’ll walk you through exactly what’s in it, and how I use it all over the house from September through November.

Benefits

The essential oils in this DIY fall cleaner aren’t just there to smell good, they bring real benefits as well:

Sweet orange essential oil is a natural cleaner in its own right. It’s high in limonene, a compound known to help cut through grease and grime. It also brings that bright, citrusy lift to the top of the scent that keeps things from smelling too heavy.
Cedarwood essential oil gives the blend its woodsy, grounding middle note. It’s been used traditionally for its antimicrobial properties, and it’s one of those oils that just smells like fall to me. Rich and earthy without being overwhelming.
Clove and cinnamon leaf essential oils are powerhouses. Both have been studied extensively for their antimicrobial activity, and both have a long history of use in traditional cleaning and preservation. They’re also what gives this spray that subtle warm spice, but at these small amounts it reads more like a walk through a forest than a holiday candle.
Fir needle or pine essential oil rounds out the base with something clean and fresh. Both have been used traditionally as antiseptic and cleansing agents, and they add a crispness that keeps the whole blend from getting too heavy or sweet.
Sal Suds is the cleaning workhorse here. It’s a concentrated, biodegradable surfactant that actually lifts and removes dirt. It’s what makes this more than just scented water. It is becoming my favorite cleaner!

DIY Fall Cleaner Spray Recipe

Makes: 8 ounce spray bottle

Ingredients

1 cup distilled water
1/2 tablespoon Sal Suds
6 to 8 drops sweet orange essential oil
5 to 6 drops cedarwood essential oil
3 to 4 drops clove OR cinnamon leaf essential oil
2 drops pine essential oil
Spray bottle

Instructions

Add the essential oils to the Sal Suds.

Combined the water and the Sal Suds. Fill the spray bottle with it.

Swirl gently to combine. Shake before each use.

Notes

This blend gives you fruity-citrus up top, woodsy in the middle, and just a hint of spice underneath, more like walking through leaves than baking a pie.
Shake well before every use since the oils will naturally separate from the water or use a natural solubizer.
Safe for most household surfaces, but always spot-test on wood or delicate materials first.
Store away from direct sunlight to help the scent last longer.

How to Use It

Spray onto counters, stovetops, the outside of appliances, bathroom surfaces, cabinet fronts, basically anywhere you’d use a regular all-purpose cleaner. Wipe down with a cloth or paper towel. That’s it!

I use it most in the kitchen and bathrooms, but honestly it’s also great for a quick wipe of the dining table before dinner when everyone’s coming over and you want the house to smell cozy without lighting a single candle.

Avoid using it directly on unsealed wood or stone without spot-testing first since any surfactant-based cleaner can affect certain finishes.

This DIY autumn cleaner is also not meant for glass-only surfaces where streaks matter, a simple vinegar-water mix handles that better.

One batch lasts me a couple weeks of regular use. I usually make a fresh one every few weeks just to keep the scent strong 🙂

If you’re pregnant or making this around babies under three months, check with your care provider before using essential oils like clove and cinnamon leaf regularly in your home environment.
