Reusable DIY Dryer Sachets

A few years ago, I started questioning everything in my laundry routine. The synthetic fragrance in dryer sheets gave me headaches, and the ingredient list felt more like a chemistry experiment than something I wanted on my clothes.

So I started experimenting, slowly replacing one thing at a time with natural alternatives. That’s when I first made these DIY dryer sachets.

These little bundles are simple to make and easy to use, and they make my clothes smell good again, without the nasty chemicals. Let me show you how I make mine and how you can try it too!

Why Use Dryer Sachets?

Dryer sachets are a simple, reusable alternative to commercial dryer sheets. You can customize the scent, choose gentle ingredients, and refresh them easily over time.

They add a soft, natural fragrance to your clothes without harsh chemicals or synthetic perfumes.

Each sachet can be used for around 15 to 20 loads. When the scent starts to fade, just add a few drops of essential oil or refill the herbs inside!

I love good smelling clothes, but I couldn’t take the chemicals in the dryer sheets. After trying all sorts of things, these dryer sachets helped give my clothes a nice smell the most.

Best Herbs and Flowers for Dryer Sachets

For this recipe, I used lavender flowers. They are easy to use and I absolutely love the smell of lavender.

While lavender is a classic choice, it’s not the only one!

You can create your own unique blends based on the scents you love or the herbal properties you’re drawn to.

Here are some of my favorite options:

  • Lavender: Calming, antibacterial, and beautifully floral
  • Rose Petals: Gentle, romantic, and naturally fragrant
  • Chamomile: Sweet, soothing, and lovely for bedtime laundry
  • Lemon Balm: Uplifting, lemony-fresh, and slightly antiviral
  • Mint (Peppermint or Spearmint): Cool, clean, and energizing, great for towels or gym clothes
  • Rosemary: Earthy, grounding, and naturally antimicrobial
  • Calendula: Subtle, sunshiny scent and very gentle on sensitive skin

You can mix and match these or use them on their own. A lavender and chamomile blend is perfect for pajamas and bedding, while mint and rosemary feel amazing on clean bath towels.

How to Make Your Own Dryer Sachets

This is a great beginner sewing project, and perfect for using up scrap fabric. I am not the best sewer, but I had NO problems making these, so I know you can too!

What You’ll Need:

  • 100% cotton fabric squares (about 6″ x 6″, I cut mine with these fabric scissors)
  • Dried herbs or flower petals of your choice (I love lavender)
  • Essential oils (I used 15 drops Pure Space Blend that is PERFECT for laundry, use code KATE10 for 10% off)
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread

Instructions

Cut your fabric into squares and sew around three edges. You’ll need 2 squares for each bag. I made mine about 6″ by 6″.

Add a few drops of essential oil to the lavender flowers if you’d like to boost the scent.

Fill the pouch about 3/4 full with your chosen herbs.

Then sew the final edge up. That’s it! Pop one into your dryer with a load of laundry and enjoy the fresh, natural scent!

In My Home

I’ve made these with my kids on a quiet afternoon, letting them pick their favorite herbs and help fill the bags. We keep a few by the dryer and store the extras in a drawer with our linens, it makes everything smell SO good.

I had tried using citronella essential oil in my laundry scent booster, and while it works some, not as much as I want it to.

But with these homemade dryer sachets, I used the Pure Space essential oil blend from Simply Earth. It has citronella in it, as well as lemongrass, lavender, rosemary, tea tree, and sage. It completely helps make our clothes smell SO good.

Use KATE10 to try it out for yourself!

They also make sweet, thoughtful DIY gifts. I’ve tied up bundles of three with twine and tucked them into holiday baskets or “new baby” packages.
