DIY Tallow Magnesium Lotion

This DIY tallow magnesium lotion is a rich, nourishing lotion that supports skin health and promotes relaxation. It is a staple in my home as we use it every single day!

If you’re looking for a natural way to combine deep skin nourishment with the calming benefits of magnesium, this DIY tallow magnesium lotion is a simple and effective recipe to try.

It blends magnesium oil with grass-fed tallow to create a thick, creamy balm that absorbs beautifully and soothes both body and mind.

This is one of those recipes that looks more complicated than it is, but once you make it, you’ll want to keep it stocked year-round.

In my home, this homemade tallow magnesium lotion has become part of our everyday routine. I keep a jar by the bed and use it on my stomach each night before sleep; it’s one of those small rituals that helps me wind down.

I’ll rub a little on my kids’ legs when they complain of growing pains or leg cramps, and it’s the first thing I reach for when someone has an upset tummy.

It’s one of those simple, homemade remedies that feels comforting to use and actually works, which is exactly why I keep making more.

Here is my DIY tallow magnesium lotion recipe for you to try out, along with all of the benefits of this cream!

Why Magnesium and Tallow?

Magnesium is an essential mineral that many people are low in, and topical magnesium is one of the easiest ways to supplement.

It’s often used for easing muscle tension, calming the nervous system, and improving sleep quality.

I definitely prefer a topical magnesium lotion like this over taking a pill as I know exactly what is in it, and it’s just overall easier to use. Plus, I find it more effective.

Tallow is deeply nourishing for the skin and mimics our skin’s natural oils, making it incredibly effective for healing dry or irritated areas.

When whipped into a lotion with magnesium oil, it creates a product that not only hydrates, but also supports the body’s stress response.

I do have a homemade magnesium lotion I made in the past, but I am really loving using tallow, so I had to make a new recipe for it and I am in LOVE!

Notes + Tips

  • Essential oils are optional. Lavender is great for calming and sleep, but Roman chamomile or frankincense also pair well.
  • You can use herb-infused tallow or avocado oil to customize your blend. Calendula, chamomile, or comfrey infusions are especially soothing. I used calendula infused oil.
  • This lotion is thick and balm-like. A little goes a long way; start small and massage into areas like legs, shoulders, or the bottoms of the feet before bed.

How to Use Tallow Magnesium Lotion

Here are some of my favorite ways to use my homemade magnesium lotion:

For Sleep
Apply to the bottoms of your feet, shoulders, or neck before bed. The combination of magnesium and lavender helps calm the nervous system and encourages restful sleep.

For Upset Stomachs
Massage gently onto the abdomen in clockwise circles. This can help ease tension, cramping, or bloating, especially useful before bed or during stressful times. This is how we use it for my kiddos all the time, and it really works.

For Sore Muscles
Rub directly into tight or achy areas like the back, shoulders, or calves. Magnesium supports muscle recovery and helps release tension after a long day or workout.

For Leg Cramps
Apply to calves or thighs before bed or after activity. Magnesium is well-known for helping reduce muscle spasms and nighttime leg cramps, and topical application delivers it right where it’s needed.
