DIY Tallow Foundation
Let’s talk about makeup that actually supports your skin! I finally made a DIY tallow foundation that I LOVE!
I used to feel like foundation was either too cakey, too drying, or loaded with ingredients I couldn’t pronounce. Then I started experimenting with tallow, and everything changed!
This whipped tallow foundation is soft, nourishing, and gives me a beautiful glow… without the junk.
Yes, it’s makeup, but it’s also skincare. Win-win for me!
Because I LOVE everything tallow, I made this foundation with it. Here is my recipe if you want to try it out too!

Why Tallow for Foundation?
Tallow is deeply moisturizing and rich in fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K, which help nourish the skin from the outside in.
It’s also incredibly similar to our skin’s own oils, which makes it a dream for dry, sensitive, or mature skin.
This foundation won’t feel like a traditional matte product, it’s creamy, breathable, and perfect for everyday wear. Think: your favorite tinted balm in a jar!
I love my castor oil tallow cream for night time use, so I really wanted something I could wear in the morning with tallow and, because I’m a busy mom, I decided to do makeup and moisturizer all in one!

DIY Tallow Foundation Recipe
This recipe make about 5-6 ounces in total.
Ingredients:
- ¼ cup tallow
- 1 tablespoon carrier oil (jojoba or sweet almond work well)
- 15 drops essential oil (optional, I like half lavender, half helichrysum)
- ¼ teaspoon mica powder
- 1–2 teaspoons non-nano zinc oxide

How To Make Homemade Foundation
Gently melt your tallow until just liquid. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

Add in the carrier oil, essential oils (if using), and zinc oxide.
Slowly stir in mica powder, a little at a time, until you reach your ideal shade.

Whip the mixture using a hand mixer for 2-3 minutes, until it becomes light and fluffy.
Spoon into a clean container and let it fully cool and set before using.

Notes
- Keep in a clean, airtight container at room temp. Lasts between 6 to 12 months typically.
- You can blend different mica powders (like bronze, ivory, or gold) to get your perfect match. Since my skin is very fair, I used just a bit of bronze.
- Always use non-nano zinc oxide so it sits on the skin rather than absorbing into it. It gives some SPF too, which is perfect for your face!
- If it hardens too fast before whipping, just warm it gently until soft again.
- Some great essential oils for your face include lavender, helichrysum, frankincense or tea tree essential oil.
- This works best on dry or combination skin types and may feel too rich for very oily skin.
