DIY Perfume for Mother’s Day
I’ve always loved the idea of giving something handmade for Mother’s Day. I did as a little girl and still love it to this day.
Not anything complicated or overdone, just something thoughtful. Something that feels personal. A DIY perfume is perfect for that because every time she uses it, she’ll think of you!
The first time I made a simple perfume with essential oils, I was surprised at how truly easy it was. And how beautiful it smelled! I got so many compliments, so I completely switched over to my natural homemade perfumes since then.
If you’ve never tried to make your own perfume before, here is an easy step by step guide on how to make perfume that is perfect to give your mom for Mother’s Day, her birthday or just to make for fun 🙂

Why This DIY Perfume Works
Perfume can feel intimidating, but once you understand the basics, it starts to make sense.
- Alcohol helps carry and preserve the scent
- Essential oils create your fragrance blend
- Time is what really brings it all together
The good news is, you don’t need anything fancy to make something that smells beautiful! The hardest part for me was finding a pretty perfume bottle I truly loved!

DIY Natural Perfume Recipe
This is a light, alcohol-based spray perfume made with essential oils. It feels elegant, but it’s actually really simple to put together.
Ingredients
- 3 oz perfumer’s alcohol (or 190 proof alcohol)
- 240 drops essential oils (about a 15% dilution, I give my recipes down below)
- Rose petals (optional, I added for the pics but I wouldn’t keep them in myself)
- Glass perfume bottle

How To Make Perfume
Add your essential oils directly into the perfumer’s alcohol.

If using, add a few dried rose petals to the bottle. I wouldn’t use them, I just added for the pictures.

Pour in the perfumer’s alcohol.

Cap the bottle and gently shake.
Store in a cool, dark place for at least 48 hours, up to 2 weeks. The longer it sits, the more the scent develops!

4 Perfume Blends to Try
If you’re not sure where to start, here are a few blends that I personally love. Each one has its own feel, so you can pick what fits best for you!
Jasmine Vanilla (warm, cozy, floral)
This is my personal favorite!
- 100 drops jasmine
- 80 drops vanilla oleoresin (or diluted vanilla)
- 60 drops ylang ylang
Fresh Garden Floral (light and clean)
Romantic Rose (deep and floral)
- 120 drops rose essential oil blend (cheaper than rose absolute but smells amazing!!)
- 60 drops patchouli
- 60 drops ylang ylang

Bright Floral Citrus (happy and uplifting)
- 100 drops tangerine
- 80 drops sweet orange
- 60 drops lavender
Notes
- If the scent feels too strong at first, let it sit longer before adjusting
- Always shake gently before using
- You can tweak the drops slightly to fit your preference
- Store in a cool, dark place to help preserve the scent
- Shelf life is about 6 to 12 months

A Simple Gift Idea
One of my favorite things about this recipe is how easy it is to turn into a gift!
You could:
- Tie a ribbon around the bottle
- Add a small handwritten label
- Pair it with a handmade soap or bath bomb
It ends up feeling really special without needing to spend much at all 🙂

A Gentle Reminder
If you’re new to essential oils, don’t worry about getting the blend perfect on the first try. Perfume making is a little bit of an art, and part of the fun is adjusting things until it feels just right.
Start simple. Trust your nose. You’ll learn what you like pretty quickly. I took the Herbal Academy’s perfume course and that really helped my confidence a lot!
