Homemade Wild Yam Root Body Butter for Hormone Support
Some days, you can feel your hormones acting up before you even open your eyes. Maybe it’s the mood swings, the fatigue, the bloating that shows up out of nowhere.
I have PCOS, a hormone condition which makes it very hard for me to manage my hormones. That’s exactly why I started leaning into herbs that specifically support the endocrine system, like wild yam.
I’ve been using a natural wild yam cream from companies for years, but once I realized I could make my own, I did and saved hundreds!
This wild yam root body butter is one of my favorite ways to use wild yam root topically. It’s creamy, moisturizing, and surprisingly easy to make (no stovetop required!).
Plus, wild yam is one of those herbs that’s been used for generations to support women’s hormonal health, especially through perimenopause and menstrual imbalances.
Helpful Resource: If you’re curious about your nutrient levels or hormone health, I used Super Power to test mine and LOVED how simple it was! They’re great for getting a clear starting point before diving into herbal support.
Here is my homemade wild yam root body butter recipe so you can make it too!

Herbal Benefits of Wild Yam Root
Wild yam (Dioscorea villosa) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine. While it doesn’t contain actual hormones, it’s often used to support the body’s natural hormone balance thanks to a compound called diosgenin.
Some herbalists use wild yam to help with:
- Menstrual cramps
- PMS and mood swings
- Menopausal discomfort
- Progesterone support
It’s most commonly used as a tea or tincture, but topical application, like this whipped body butter, is a gentle and effective way to get its benefits right through the skin, especially around the abdomen or lower back.
Safety Note: Wild yam is generally considered safe for most people when used topically, but always do a patch test first. If you’re pregnant or have a hormone-sensitive condition, it’s best to check with your practitioner.

Wild Yam Root Body Butter Recipe
This makes about 12-14 ounces.
Ingredients
- Carrier oil (I used avocado oil)
- Wild yam root
- ½ cup shea butter
- ¼ cup coconut oil
- ¼ cup wild yam root infused oil
- 15 drops essential oils (optional, I used clary sage)
- Glass jar for storage

Instructions
Make a wild yam root infused oil by placing the wild yam into a glass jar. Pour the carrier oil on top to completely cover the herb. Let sit for a few weeks, shaking every now and again. Then strain.

Add shea butter to a stand mixer with the wire whip attachment. Whip on high for 1 minute, then switch to low for 3 minutes.

Add the coconut oil and wild yam infused oil. Whip on high for 1 minute, then on low for another 3.

Add your essential oils, if using.

Whip on low for 1 more minute, or until the mixture is light, fluffy, and creamy.
Spoon into a clean glass container and label it.

Notes:
- Essential oils are optional. Clary sage, lavender, and geranium are all supportive for hormone balance.
- You can use any carrier oil to infuse the wild yam root. I used avocado oil for this batch because it’s nourishing and absorbs well.
- This butter should last about 6 months. Store it in a cool, dry place and toss it if it ever smells off or changes texture.

How To Use It
Apply a small amount of this wild yam cream to your lower abdomen, lower back, or inner thighs once or twice a day. These areas have thinner skin and are great for topical absorption, especially when supporting hormone health.
I like to use mine after a warm shower when my skin is soft and ready to drink it in. You can also massage it in before bed, just a small scoop goes a long way.
For cycle support, some herbalists recommend using it during the luteal phase (the second half of your cycle) when progesterone naturally rises. I personally use it for a few weeks at a time, take breaks, and adjust based on how my body feels.
As always, listen to your body and track how you feel over time. Topical herbal support works best when paired with good nutrition, rest, and consistent routines.
