DIY Makeup Remover (That Actually Works!)

If you’ve been searching for a gentle, natural way to remove makeup, this DIY makeup remover is a must-try. It is so much better for your skin than the store-bought stuff and super easy to make!

I’ve tried SO many natural makeup removers over the years. Some were too greasy, others burned my eyes, and most didn’t get all the mascara off.

But this? This one actually works and feels like skincare at the same time.

This DIY tallow makeup remover has become my go-to at the end of the day when I wear makeup. It’s simple to make, packed with nourishing oils, and gives that soft, clean feeling without stripping your skin.

I love how hydrating it is, since it uses tallow, one of my favorite skincare ingredients. Here is my homemade makeup remover recipe!

Why I Love Using Tallow

I know tallow can sound intimidating at first, but once I started using it in my skincare, I was hooked.

It’s rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K, exactly what our skin needs to repair and stay soft. It’s deeply nourishing without clogging pores and blends beautifully with herbal infusions if you want to take it up a notch.

If I have a batch of calendula or chamomile-infused tallow on hand, I’ll use it in this recipe because it adds a calming, healing touch that my skin loves.

Benefits of Each Ingredient

Here’s why I used each ingredient is in this blend:

  • Tallow: It’s soothing, nutrient-rich, and leaves your skin feeling soft and calm.
  • Castor Oil: It’s powerful for removing mascara and supporting lash health, but gentle.
  • Coconut Oil: Helps break down stubborn makeup while adding a silky texture.
  • Vitamin E Oil: A natural antioxidant that keeps your blend fresh and adds a boost of benefits for your skin.
  • Jojoba Oil: Balances and nourishes without feeling heavy, and is perfect for sensitive skin.
  • Lavender Essential Oil (optional): I love using just a drop or two for a gentle, relaxing scent. But skip it if you’re sensitive or plan to use this near your eyes.

Note: Avoid peppermint or any strong essential oils here; those can sting like crazy near the eyes!

This makes about 4-5 ounces. I store mine in a small glass jar with a lid and it’s just the right size for my bathroom shelf.

Ingredients

Instructions

Melt the tallow and coconut oil in a glass bowl over a double boiler on medium-low heat.

Once fully melted, remove from heat and stir in the castor, vitamin E, and jojoba oils.

Add essential oil if using, and stir again.

Let it cool and harden at room temperature. I like to give it a quick stir once it’s semi-solid to make sure everything is evenly mixed.

Scoop it into your jar, and it’s ready to use!

Notes

  • Essential oils are optional.  If using, only add a few drops and make sure they are not powerful ones that can hurt your eyes. I use lavender essential oil sometimes. Stay away from peppermint!
  • You can use herbs infused oils or tallow as well!
  • I do prefer to use it in the shower; I think it works in their best, but that’s just my preference.

How I Use It Every Night

I like to get my face wet in the shower to start the process of removing the makeup.

I scoop out a pea-sized amount, warm it between my fingertips, and gently massage it onto my skin.

Then I use a warm, soft washcloth to wipe it all away. It melts off makeup, sunscreen, and all the daily grime while leaving my skin soft and nourished.
