DIY Dry Shampoo Powder Recipe

If you’ve ever woken up with oily roots but didn’t have time to wash your hair, this DIY dry shampoo powder can be a lifesaver. It’s one of those products many people rely on between washes!

But most store-bought dry shampoos contain aerosol propellants, synthetic fragrances, and ingredients that can build up on the scalp. Making your own dry shampoo at home is a simple way to control what goes into your hair care routine.

This homemade dry shampoo powder uses just a few ingredients to help absorb excess oil and refresh your hair quickly. Plus, it is SO easy to make, you will be able to have it done in as little as 5 minutes! Here is how to make it.

Benefits of the Ingredients

• Arrowroot powder helps absorb oil from the scalp and roots, leaving hair looking fresher between washes.

• Cacao powder helps darken the powder so it blends better with darker hair colors. You can also use nutmeg, clove, or other spices to get the exact color you want.

• Essential oils are optional but can add a light scent and support scalp health depending on the oil used 🙂

DIY Dry Shampoo Powder Recipe

This recipe makes about 2 ounces

Ingredients

Instructions

Combine the arrowroot powder and cacao powder in a small bowl.

If there are any clumps, run the mixture through a coffee grinder to make it smooth.

Add one drop of essential oil if using and stir well to combine.

Transfer the mixture into an airtight container for storage.

To Use

Dip a makeup brush into the powder and lightly brush it onto the roots of your hair where oil tends to build up.

Let it sit for a minute, then brush or massage through your hair to distribute and absorb the oil.

Notes

  • Essential oils are optional. Only one drop is needed! Rosemary essential oil is a popular option because it’s commonly used to support healthy hair.
  • The amount of cacao powder depends on your hair color. Light blonde hair may not need cacao powder at all. Dark blonde or light brown hair may use about ½ tablespoon. Darker hair colors may need slightly more.
  • Cornstarch can be used instead of arrowroot powder if that’s what you have available!
  • Store the dry shampoo in an airtight container to keep it dry and fresh. It should last a long time!
