DIY Tallow Hair Wax Stick
I don’t know if it’s just me, but those little flyaways always seem to show up at the worst times! Church mornings, running out the door, hair already done, and then there they are.
That’s actually why I started making my own DIY tallow hair wax stick. I wanted something simple, clean, and gentle that I could swipe on quickly without worrying about weird ingredients.
This homemade hair wax stick is one I make all the time now, and it’s especially nice because it’s made with nourishing ingredients that actually support your hair instead of just holding it in place!
My daughter and I use it weekly and love the benefits that come from it, so I had to share my simple hair wax recipe with you 🙂

Why These Ingredients Work
One of my favorite things about this recipe is how each ingredient has a purpose:
- Beeswax gives hold and structure
- Shea butter softens and conditions
- Tallow deeply nourishes and supports hair health
- Castor oil adds shine and helps smooth strands
- Essential oils are optional but give some great benefits (like lavender or rosemary) and a nice scent as well
It’s simple, but it works really well! Herbs and natural ingredients are amazing that way 🙂

DIY Tallow Hair Wax Stick Recipe
This little stick is perfect for smoothing baby hairs, taming flyaways, or keeping a bun looking neat without that stiff, crunchy feeling!
It makes about 2 sticks, or 2 ounces total:
Ingredients
- 2 ½ tablespoons beeswax
- 1 ½ tablespoons shea butter
- 1 ½ tablespoons tallow
- ¾ tablespoon castor oil
- 15 drops essential oil (about 1% dilution, I did half lavender, half rosemary)
- 1 ounce tubes

Instructions
Add the beeswax, shea butter, tallow, and castor oil to a heat-safe glass bowl.
Melt using a double boiler, stirring until everything is fully melted.

Remove from heat and let it cool for about a minute.
Stir in your essential oils.

Quickly pour into your tubes before it starts to harden.

Let it cool completely before using.

How to Use
Swipe lightly over:
- Flyaways
- Baby hairs
- Slicked-back styles
- Buns or braids
A little goes a long way, so start with just a light swipe and build if needed!

Notes
- Store in a cool, dry place
- Shelf life is about 6 to 12 months
- If your home is warm, it may soften slightly, just keep it out of direct heat
- You don’t need anything fancy for scent, lavender or a light citrus works well. I did rosemary and lavender to get more benefits for my hair 🙂

A Quick Tip
If you’re new to using tallow, this is such an easy place to start. It blends so nicely with the other ingredients and doesn’t feel heavy when used in small amounts.
And if you end up loving it, my Tallow Recipe eBook has more simple ways to use it for both skincare and everyday products.

Final Thoughts
Sometimes the simplest recipes end up being the ones you reach for every day. This DIY tallow hair wax stick is one of those you will want to try and enjoy daily, especially if you have little baby hairs or flyaways!
It’s quick, it works, and I know exactly what’s in it. And honestly, that peace of mind is one of the biggest reasons I started making my own natural products in the first place.
If you try it, I think you’ll see just how easy natural living can be 🙂
