DIY Tallow Face Scrub Recipe

I found a lady who sold face scrubs that were gentle enough but were so powerful to exfoliate my face. I stocked up on them since they were my favorite! Sadly, she doesn’t sell them anymore, so I got to work on creating my own!

This DIY tallow face scrub is gentle, creamy, and supportive for dry or sensitive skin. If you’ve been wanting a homemade face exfoliator that doesn’t leave your skin feeling stripped, this homemade face scrub recipe is the one you want!

It fits perfectly into a natural skin care routine, especially if you already love DIY tallow or are experimenting with tallow skincare recipes.

Why These Ingredients Work

Here is a little bit on why I chose these specific ingredients to make my homemade tallow face scrub:

Tallow

Tallow is rich in fat-soluble vitamins and closely resembles the natural oils in our skin. That’s one reason DIY skin care lovers swear by it!

In this tallow skin care recipe, it helps balance the exfoliation by adding deep nourishment. Instead of feeling tight after exfoliating, your skin feels supported and soft.

If you’re new to using tallow in your DIY recipe, this is a wonderful introduction before trying a full tallow face wash recipe or whipped tallow balm.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal is one of my favorite ingredients for sensitive skin. It’s soothing, gentle, and helps calm irritation. That’s why you’ll see it often in homemade oatmeal skincare and DIY face scrub for sensitive skin recipes.

Ground finely, it becomes a beautiful oatmeal face exfoliator that’s mild but effective. I love my oatmeal lotion and my coffee face scrub with oatmeal, so I knew had to include it here too!

Lavender

Lavender supports calm skin and adds a soft herbal scent. It pairs perfectly with oats and tallow in this oatmeal facial scrub. I didn’t even need essential oils because the lavender smelled so good!

Rice Flour

Rice flour adds a soft polishing effect. It turns this into a DIY exfoliating face scrub that feels refined and smooth rather than scratchy.

It is gentle but effective, a win-win!

Ingredients

Instructions

Using a clean coffee grinder or high-speed blender, grind the oatmeal and lavender into a fine powder. Set aside.

In a clean bowl, combine the oatmeal powder, lavender powder, and rice flour. Mix thoroughly.

Melt the tallow gently until it has just melted. I usually do this in a double boiler.

Add the essential oil to the melted tallow and stir well.

Pour the tallow into the dry ingredients and mix until fully combined.

Notes

  • Shelf life: 6 to 12 months when stored properly.
  • Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from heat and moisture. Always use dry hands or a scoop to prevent introducing water into the container.
  • Texture adjustment: If you prefer a softer scrub, reduce the rice flour slightly. For more exfoliation, increase it a bit.
  • Sensitive skin tip: Skip the essential oil if you’re very sensitive. The lavender herb alone gives a nice scent!

How To Use Tallow Face Scrub

Apply a small amount to damp skin and gently massage in circular motions. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.

I found better success when I would add a few drops of water to create more like a paste and then rub it on my face.

Use 1 to 2 times per week as part of your natural face exfoliant routine.

Because this is a gentle face scrub DIY, you don’t need to press hard! The ingredients alone will do the work with gentle circular motions.
