DIY Hibiscus Body Scrub

This DIY Hibiscus Body Scrub blends the beauty of the flower with the power of plant-based exfoliation for a truly skin-loving ritual.

I love hibiscus flowers. They remind me of my time living in Hawaii. They are so vibrant and beautiful, I was amazed when I found out how amazing they are for your skin and health!

So I have been busy making all the things with hibiscus! I made a easy soap, bath bomb, cleansing grains, and now onto a sugar scrub.

This recipe is SO easy to make and feels wonderful on my skin, so I had to share it with you! Here is my simple homemade hibiscus body scrub recipe.

Why Hibiscus?

Hibiscus isn’t just a pretty flower, it’s a powerhouse in herbal skincare. Often called the “Botox plant,” hibiscus is rich in skin-loving compounds that gently exfoliate, hydrate, and support healthy aging.

  • Natural Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs): Hibiscus contains gentle AHAs that help exfoliate the top layer of dead skin cells, revealing brighter, smoother skin underneath.
  • Antioxidants + Vitamin C: The deep red pigment in hibiscus comes from anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants that help protect the skin from oxidative stress and support collagen production.
  • Hydration Support: Hibiscus is known for its mucilage content, those naturally occurring plant gels that help lock in moisture and soothe dry, irritated skin.
  • Skin Firming: Thanks to its astringent nature, hibiscus can help tone and tighten the skin, making it a lovely ingredient for mature or tired-looking skin.

I LOVE how clean and fresh my skin looks and feels after using hibiscus, and you will too!

This recipe made around 12 ounces for me! Here is how to make it:

Ingredients

ingredients for hibiscus body scrub

Instructions

Infuse the Oil: Add dried hibiscus flowers to a clean glass jar until it’s about ¾ full. Cover completely with your carrier oil and seal with a lid. Let it infuse for 2–4 weeks, shaking gently every few days. Once ready, strain through a fine mesh or cheesecloth.

making the hibiscus infused oil

Mix the Base: Stir your essential oils into ½ cup of the infused hibiscus oil.

Create the Scrub: In a separate bowl, mix the sugar with the infused oil mixture until fully combined.

Add the Powder: Gently fold in the hibiscus powder, which adds extra exfoliation and a beautiful color.

Package It Up: Spoon the scrub into clean jars and store in a cool, dry place.

Notes

  • Essential Oils: These are optional, but calming florals like lavender, rose, or geranium complement hibiscus beautifully. My favorite is a rose geranium essential oil.
  • Carrier Oils: Olive oil creates a rich, nourishing scrub, but feel free to use lighter oils if preferred. I prefer avocado oil actually!
  • Hibiscus Powder: You can make your own by grinding dried hibiscus in a spice grinder. The finer the powder, the smoother the scrub. I used the end of the jar of my hibiscus flowers and grinded it up a bit.
