DIY Eucalyptus Sugar Scrub Recipe

Every time I ask my mother-in-law how to help heal anything naturally, her first word is eucalyptus. Congestion, sore muscles, tired sinuses, eucalyptus always seems to come up in the conversation.

This DIY eucalyptus sugar scrub is a simple one, but it feels so good to use, especially when your skin needs a little exfoliation and you want that fresh, cooling scent at the same time.

My simple homemade eucalyptus body scrub recipe gently exfoliates the skin while the eucalyptus adds a clean, cooling scent that wakes you up a little so you can take a nice deep breath and “heal” while taking a shower!

Herbal Benefits of Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is often used for respiratory support, but it can also be helpful in skincare!

Dried eucalyptus leaves contain natural plant compounds that can help soothe and refresh the skin. When combined with sugar and nourishing oils, it makes a really nice exfoliating scrub.

Here are some more benefits to this eucalyptus sugar scrub:

  • Eucalyptus naturally creates a cooling sensation on the skin, which can feel especially nice in the shower or after a long day.
  • Because of that cooling effect, eucalyptus is often used in muscle balms, massage oils, and bath products to help the body feel more relaxed.
  • Eucalyptus contains plant compounds that are known for their cleansing properties, which is why it is often added to soaps, scrubs, and body washes.
  • The strong, crisp scent of eucalyptus can make showers feel more energizing and refreshing. I love using it in the morning when I need to wake up!
  • When dried eucalyptus leaves are ground into powder and mixed into a sugar scrub, they add a little extra herbal exfoliating help!
  • If you are new to herbal skincare, eucalyptus is an easy herb to start with because a little goes a long way.

A quick safety note, eucalyptus essential oil is strong! It is generally best for adults and older children 10+, NOT for young kids!

How To Make Eucalyptus Sugar Scrub

Using a coffee grinder or mortar and pestle, grind the dried eucalyptus leaves into a fine powder.

In a mixing bowl, combine the sugar and powdered eucalyptus leaves. Stir well to distribute evenly.

Add the carrier oil and mix until the texture resembles damp sand.

Transfer to a clean, airtight jar. That’s it! This DIY sugar scrub recipe is easy enough for beginners, but it feels like something special.

How To Use

Scoop out a small amount in the shower and gently massage it onto damp skin. Rinse well and pat your skin dry.

This is especially nice to use on legs, arms, and tired shoulders after a long day.

Notes

  • Store the scrub in a clean airtight jar.
  • Try to keep water out of the container so the scrub lasts longer. I like to scoop it out with spoon so I don’t get water in it!
  • Shelf life is usually about 2 to 3 months when stored in a cool, dry place after you first use it.
  • Because this recipe contains oil, it may make your shower floor a little slippery, so be careful.
  • If you do not have sweet almond or jojoba oil, olive oil or avocado oil works just fine too! I like to mix it up and have used all of these carrier oils before.
  • Make an eucalyptus infused oil to further give you the herbal benefits!

One of my favorite things about simple scrubs like this is how easy they are to customize. Once you make one, it becomes really simple to try different herbs and oils.
