Homemade Vaseline Recipe
If you’ve ever looked at the ingredient list on petroleum jelly, you might have wondered if there’s a more natural option. Traditional Vaseline is made from petroleum byproducts, which is why many people look for simple alternatives made with natural ingredients.
The good news is that it’s very easy to make your own homemade Vaseline at home. With just a few nourishing oils and beeswax, you can create a smooth, protective balm that works much like petroleum jelly but uses ingredients you recognize!
And honestly, it works WAY better!
This DIY Vaseline recipe is great for dry skin, chapped lips, and many skincare products. Here is my simple recipe!

Benefits of the Ingredients
- Coconut oil helps moisturize and soften dry skin while giving the balm a smooth texture. It also has antifungal and antibacterial properties as well [source].
- Beeswax pellets create a protective barrier on the skin that helps lock in moisture and protect against dryness.
- Olive oil nourishes and hydrates the skin while adding extra softness to the final balm.
- Essential oils are optional but can add a light natural scent depending on the oil you choose and can have some great natural properties for healing as well.

Homemade Vaseline Recipe
This makes about 4 ounces.
Ingredients
- ¼ cup coconut oil
- 1/8 cup beeswax
- ¼ cup olive oil
- 20 drops essential oils (optional)

Instructions
Add the olive oil, coconut oil, and beeswax to a glass jar.

Heat the jar slowly in on a double boiler or saucepan on low heat until everything melts.

Once melted, allow the mixture to cool slightly.
Add essential oils if you are using them and stir well.

Pour the mixture into your container.
Let it harden overnight at room temperature before placing the lid on.

Notes:
- Essential oils are completely optional. If you want the balm to resemble traditional Vaseline as closely as possible, it’s best to leave them out. If you want some healing properties, helichrysum, lavender, or tea tree essential oil.
- Any carrier oil will work in this recipe. Olive oil is a great option because it is nourishing and easy to find.
- Store the finished balm in a cool, dry place.
- The balm should last 6-12 months depending on the freshness of your oils.

How I Like to Use This
This type of Vaseline balm is incredibly versatile and works in many of the same ways traditional petroleum jelly does!
It can be used for:
- Chapped lips
- Dry elbows or knees
- Protecting cracked hands
- Soothing dry heels
- Creating a protective skin barrier during cold weather
- And so much more!
Because it’s made with nourishing oils instead of petroleum, it also doubles as a simple moisturizing balm!
