DIY Honey Tallow Balm
My sister started using a tallow balm but it had honey in it. She asked me to make one for her, so I worked up my magic and made my own DIY honey tallow balm!
It is really nourishing and provides so many benefits, so I wanted to share that recipe with you too. So many people love the combination of tallow and honey, for good reason!
If you’ve been searching for a deeply nourishing, completely natural balm that supports dry, sensitive, or irritated skin, this Honey Tallow Balm might become your new go-to.
Why These Ingredients Work So Well
This recipe is built on simple, time-tested ingredients, each chosen for their skin-loving properties:
- Tallow: Traditionally rendered from grass-fed beef fat, tallow is rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K, and its composition is remarkably similar to our skin’s natural oils. It deeply nourishes, repairs, and protects, making it perfect for dry, inflamed, or sensitive skin.
- Raw Honey: A natural humectant, honey draws moisture into the skin while also offering antibacterial and healing properties. It helps soothe minor irritations and adds a soft glow to the balm.
- Avocado Oil (or any carrier oil): Avocado oil is deeply moisturizing and full of healthy fats that help repair the skin barrier. You can also use olive oil, jojoba oil, or sweet almond oil depending on what you have on hand.
- Shea Butter: Adds extra creaminess to the balm and provides additional anti-inflammatory and moisturizing support.
- Essential Oils (Optional): Lavender, chamomile, tea tree, or frankincense are all wonderful choices depending on your needs.

DIY Honey Tallow Balm Recipe
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup tallow
- 1 tbsp raw honey
- 1 tbsp avocado oil (or any carrier oil)
- 1 tbsp shea butter
- 10 drops essential oils (optional, but I loved using 5 drops lavender and 5 drops helichrysum)
Instructions
In a double boiler, gently melt the tallow, shea butter, and avocado oil over low to medium heat. Avoid high heat to preserve the nutrients.
Once fully melted, remove from heat and stir in the raw honey. Keep stirring until it’s fully incorporated.
If using, add your essential oils of choice and mix well. Place in the fridge for about 30 minutes to set.
For a fluffier balm, whip the mixture with a hand mixer for a few minutes until it becomes light and airy.
To Use: Apply a small amount anywhere your skin needs extra nourishment, hands, feet, elbows, or even lips.
Notes
- Sometimes, the honey can separate slightly or settle at the bottom as the balm cools. That’s totally normal. Giving it a quick whip after chilling helps re-integrate everything into a fluffy, even texture.
- Everyone’s skin is different. Even though these are gentle, natural ingredients, it’s always wise to test a small amount on the inside of your wrist or forearm before using it more widely.
- Some people believe that raw honey acts as a natural preservative because of its antimicrobial properties, while others feel it’s not enough on its own to prevent spoilage in skincare products. In my experience, when used in small amounts and stored properly, this balm keeps well for a few months. Just be mindful to avoid introducing water into the jar, as that can shorten its shelf life. I usually add a preservative to stay on the safe side!
