Homemade Chamomile Body Butter Recipe
This DIY chamomile body butter recipe is a calming, whipped moisturizer your skin will love.
If you’re looking for a gentle, nourishing way to hydrate your skin—especially if you deal with irritation, dryness, or sensitivity—this DIY chamomile body butter is a beautiful place to start.
As an herbalist, I always try to keep my skincare routine simple and soothing. Chamomile is one of those herbs that’s easy to love: it’s calming, anti-inflammatory, and works well for just about every skin type (including kids and sensitive skin).
Paired with coconut oil and shea butter, this whipped body butter feels soft, creamy, and incredibly hydrating.
It’s one of my favorite recipes to keep on hand during the dry months or anytime my skin needs a little extra TLC.
So here is my recipe, along with some of the benefits and how to use this homemade chamomile body butter.

Why Chamomile?
Chamomile has been used for centuries to calm both the body and the skin. When infused into oil, it delivers all those skin-soothing benefits directly where you need them.
Here’s why I love it in body butter:
- Reduces inflammation – Great for irritated, itchy, or inflamed skin
- Soothes sensitive areas – Perfect for eczema-prone or post-shave skin. My legs always have such trouble after shaving, and chamomile made it so much better!
- Calms redness and irritation – Gentle enough for even the most reactive skin
- Smells naturally comforting – Especially if you use Roman chamomile essential oil
Whether you’re using it on your arms, legs, or baby’s skin, chamomile brings a calming touch to your moisturizing routine.

DIY Chamomile Body Butter Recipe
Here is my DIY chamomile body butter recipe. It makes about 4–5 ounces:
Ingredients
- Chamomile flowers (dried, whole or loose)
- ½ cup + 2 tablespoons coconut oil
- ¼ cup shea butter
- 10–15 drops roman chamomile essential oil

Instructions
Add the coconut oil and chamomile flowers to a glass jar or bowl. Set it in a double boiler over low heat and let it infuse for a few hours, stirring occasionally.

Once the oil is nicely infused and golden, strain out the chamomile flowers using cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer.

Measure out ½ cup of your infused coconut oil and place it back in the double boiler with the shea butter. Heat gently until fully melted and combined.

Let the mixture cool for a few minutes. Then stir in your essential oils if using.

Let the body butter cool and harden at room temperature (or speed things up in the fridge). Once solid but not frozen, use an immersion blender or hand mixer to whip it until it’s light and fluffy.

Notes + Tips
- Roman chamomile essential oil not only enhances the calming properties but also gives this body butter a beautiful soft hue.
- You can use any essential oil you love—lavender, frankincense, or even sweet orange all work well.
- Store in a cool, dry place. This body butter will keep for several months in an airtight container.
- Want it firmer? Add a tablespoon of beeswax during the melting step.
