DIY Anti Itch Spray Recipe

There’s something deeply frustrating about an itch you just can’t shake, whether it’s from a mosquito bite, a brush with a plant, or dry irritated skin that flares up out of nowhere.

Before you reach for a tube of chemical-laden cream, consider that your kitchen and herb cabinet might already hold everything you need to find real, soothing relief. This simple DIY anti itch spray is one of those remedies that makes you wonder why you didn’t discover it sooner!

I HATE bug bites. I get so many all the time, and I just scratch and scratch and scratch. So I went out to try to find something that helps! I made a bug bite itch relief salve, but wanted a spray version that works too!

Rooted in the long tradition of using plants to calm and heal the skin, this homemade spray brings together just four thoughtfully chosen ingredients, each with its own history of soothing irritated tissue and cooling uncomfortable inflammation.

Whether you’re dealing with summer bug bites, a heat rash, or that maddening itch that seems to appear for no reason at all, this itch relief recipe is gentle, effective, and incredibly easy to make. Here is my simple recipe!

Herbal Benefits

What makes this homemade anti itch spray so effective isn’t magic, it’s the herbal properties of the individual ingredients working together in harmony 🙂

  • Witch hazel is perhaps the most celebrated natural astringent in herbal skincare. Derived from the bark and leaves of the Hamamelis virginiana shrub, it has been used by Indigenous peoples of North America for centuries to calm inflamed skin, reduce swelling, and cleanse minor wounds.

Its tannin content gives it that characteristic ability to tighten skin tissue and reduce redness, making it an ideal base for a bug bite itch spray.
  • Chamomile: Infusing witch hazel with chamomile flowers combines the natural astringent and anti-inflammatory properties of witch hazel with chamomile’s soothing, skin-calming compounds to create a powerful remedy for irritated skin.

Together, they work to reduce redness, calm histamine-triggered inflammation, and provide gentle, fast-acting relief from itching caused by bug bites, rashes, or dry skin.
  • Menthol crystals are derived from peppermint and other mint plants and are the reason this spray delivers that satisfying, cooling rush the moment it touches your skin.

Menthol works by activating the same cold-sensitive receptors in your skin that respond to actual cold temperatures, essentially tricking your nervous system into feeling cool instead of itchy. This is one of the most direct, time-tested answers to how to stop itches quickly and naturally.
  • Aloe vera gel: The gel from the Aloe barbadensis plant is rich in polysaccharides and compounds like acemannan that are known for soothing, moisturizing, and supporting the skin’s natural healing process. It acts as a gentle carrier in this recipe and adds a layer of skin-softening relief.
  • Peppermint or lavender essential oil are what I used in this recipe. Peppermint essential oil amplifies the cooling, anti-itch sensation of the menthol crystals.

Lavender essential oil, on the other hand, brings its own calming and skin-supportive properties, making it a wonderful choice if you’re spraying on more sensitive or reactive skin!

DIY Anti Itch Spray Recipe

Makes: Approximately ½ cup

Ingredients:

Instructions

Infuse your witch hazel with chamomile for 2 weeks, then strain.

Heat the witch hazel on low heat until warm. It shouldn’t hurt to touch. Slowly add in the menthol crystals until dissolved. Then wait for it to cool down.

Add in your essential oils to the aloe vera gel.

Then add the aloe vera gel mixture to the witch hazel and stir to combine. Pour into your spray bottle.

Notes

  • Keep your spray in the refrigerator between uses, the cold temperature will actually enhance that cooling, itch-relieving effect and help it stay fresh for a few weeks.
  • You can use a preservative to keep it fresh longer! I use Geogard ECT.
  • This is for use for adults; I wouldn’t use the menthol crystals or peppermint essential oil with kids younger than 10 years old.

How to Use It

  • For bug bites: Spray directly onto the bite and let it air dry. You can reapply every few hours as needed or whenever the itch returns.
  • For general skin irritation or rashes: Mist lightly over the affected area.
  • Who should use caution: Avoid applying near the eyes or on broken skin. If you are pregnant, nursing, or making this for young children, consult with a healthcare provider before use, particularly regarding essential oil choices and concentrations. Those with known sensitivities to any of the ingredients should patch test first.
