DIY Calendula Lip Balm Recipe

This DIY calendula lip balm recipe is a soothing herbal remedy for dry, cracked lips. It is one of my absolute favorite lip balms to use and constantly make a new batch all the time!

If you’ve ever dealt with dry, chapped lips—especially in the winter or after too much sun exposure—you know how uncomfortable it can be.

Store-bought lip balms promise relief, but so many are filled with synthetic fragrances, petroleum, or ingredients that offer temporary comfort without actually healing anything.

That’s where calendula comes in.

As an herbalist and a mom, I’ve come to rely on calendula for just about everything skin-related. It’s one of those herbs that’s gentle enough for babies, yet strong enough to support real healing. I use it in diaper creams, salves, body oils—and yes, lip balm.

This DIY calendula lip balm is one of my favorite ways to use the herb. It’s incredibly simple to make, and it actually works. It hydrates, soothes, and protects the skin on your lips without any added junk. Plus, when you make it yourself, you get to control exactly what goes into it.

If you’re just starting out with herbal skincare, this is the perfect recipe to begin with. And if you already love calendula, you’re going to want to keep this balm in your bag, on your nightstand, and probably in your car too, just like I do!

Why Calendula for Lip Balm?

Calendula (Calendula officinalis) is a go-to herb for skin health. It’s soothing, anti-inflammatory, and supports tissue repair—making it a perfect match for dry, cracked, or sensitive lips.

Here’s why it works so well:

  • Reduces inflammation – Helpful for irritated lips or cold sores
  • Speeds up healing – Encourages skin regeneration and collagen production
  • Hydrates and protects – Helps seal in moisture and strengthen the skin barrier
  • Safe and gentle – Edible, non-toxic, and great for kids or sensitive skin
