DIY Oatmeal Sugar Scrub
I recently shared my DIY oatmeal milk bath that I used to help with my son’s rashes that worked like a miracle. I’ve used tried a homemade oatmeal body butter that always made our skin feel better, so I knew oats were pretty incredible.
So I tried finding more ways to incorporate them into my DIY skincare routine.
This oatmeal sugar scrub is one of those quiet little herbal helpers, humble, nourishing, and always there when you need a little softening and soothing.
I absolutely love sugar scrubs, so I knew I would love this one too, because it’s that good. Here is my easy DIY oatmeal sugar scrub recipe so you can enjoy healthy skin too!

Benefits of Each Ingredient
Here are some of the many benefits that come from incorporating oatmeal into your regular sugar scrub:
Oatmeal: Ground oats (or colloidal oatmeal, if you have it) are naturally calming and soothing, making them ideal for sensitive or irritated skin.
They gently exfoliate while also moisturizing and reducing inflammation. Oats are often used to help with eczema, dryness, and itchiness. This is what helps my son’s rash the most!
Sugar: Sugar acts as a physical exfoliant, helping remove dead skin cells and unclog pores. It also has natural humectant properties, meaning it helps draw moisture into the skin. Sugar scrubs are the only way I can get rid of my dry skin.
Carrier oils: Whether you choose almond oil, jojoba, olive, or even avocado oil (often what I use), they all work to deeply moisturize and replenish the skin barrier.
These carrier oils can be tailored to your skin’s needs, lighter ones for oily skin, richer ones for very dry skin.
Essential oils (optional): You can skip these if you’re sensitive or just want a simpler scrub, but adding a few drops of lavender, chamomile, or frankincense can really help with your skincare.
Lavender in particular adds a calming, floral note and is wonderful for dry or sensitive skin. It also has many healing properties, especially with dry skin, eczema, and itchiness [source].

DIY Oatmeal Sugar Scrub Recipe
This makes around 3-4 ounces, and will last awhile, even if you use a couple times a week like I do. Here is how to make it:
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons oatmeal
- ½ cup sugar
- ¼ cup carrier oil (I prefer avocado oil or a lavender infused oil)
- 10 drops lavender essential oil (optional)

Instructions
Add the drops of essential oil into the carrier oil and stir to combine.
Grind the oats down into a powder.

Then, mix everything together.

Put in a glass jar.

Notes
- Essential oils are optional, but I love lavender in it!
- Any carrier oil will work. I used avocado oil. I love herbal infused oils in it!
- You can also use colloidal oatmeal instead of grinding down oatmeal.

How to Use It
Scoop a small amount into your hand and gently massage onto damp skin in a circular motion. Rinse with warm water and pat your skin dry.
I especially love using this scrub on my hands and legs after a long day. It leaves my skin soft, calm, and cared for.
