DIY Wooden Wick Candles

There’s something undeniably peaceful about crafting your own candle from start to finish. From the gentle melting of wax to the quiet moment of setting a wick, the whole process invites you to slow down and be present.

Add in a wooden wick that softly crackles as it burns, and suddenly, you’re not just making a candle; you’re creating a moment of calm.

I’ve been making candles for a few years now, trying to figure out the best method and what oils to use for the strongest smell.

Through lots of trial and error, I’ve gotten closer at figuring it out. But I recently found a candle kit that comes with everything you need and makes the process SO easy to do.

The DIY Blessings Candle Kit from Simply Earth beautifully blends this sense of presence with purpose. It includes everything you need to make two wooden wick candles, each infused with thoughtful fragrance and your own personal blessing.

Whether you’re making these for yourself or gifting them to a loved one, the experience is both meaningful and accessible, even for complete beginners.

Why Choose a Wooden Wick?

Wooden wicks aren’t just beautiful to look at, they offer some lovely benefits that make them worth trying, especially in DIY candle making.

Here are why I like them:

  • Soothing Sound: One of the things I love most is the gentle crackle. It adds a cozy, calming atmosphere, almost like a mini fireplace.
  • Cleaner Burn: Wooden wicks tend to produce less soot than traditional cotton wicks, which means a cleaner burn and less residue on your jars or walls.
  • Even Wax Melt: They help create a more even melt pool, which can lead to better scent throw and less wasted wax over time.
  • Sustainable & Natural: Most wooden wicks are made from untreated, natural wood, often from FSC-certified sources, making them an earth-friendly choice.
  • Unique Flame: The flame from a wooden wick is broader and lower than a cotton wick, giving off a soft glow that feels extra relaxing.

If you’re new to wooden wicks, don’t be intimidated. They’re just as easy to work with as cotton wicks, and bring a beautiful element of sensory richness to your handmade candles.

DIY Wooden Wick Candle Recipe

Here’s how to make your own wooden wick candles:

Use a permanent marker to write a blessing, prayer, or kind thought directly on each wooden wick. (Write it high enough that it won’t be trimmed away.) Use the notecards to jot it down too, perfect for gifting or just keeping close.

I wrote peace on mine because I need more peace as a busy mom!

write on the wick

Slide the wick into the metal clip. Stick a wick sticker to the bottom of the clip, then press it firmly into the center of your candle vessel.

add in the wick to the candle jar

Melt the wax slowly in a large double boiler, stirring occasionally.

Let your wax cool slightly before adding oils. Ideally, add them around 185°F for the best scent throw.

  • Add Palo Santo Fragrance Oil
  • Add Bergamot Essential Oil

Stir slowly and thoroughly for 2-3 minutes.

Carefully pour the scented wax into your prepared vessels. Let them cool on a flat surface for at least 24 hours undisturbed.

Trim the wooden wicks to 1/8 inch before lighting. Light your candle, breathe deeply, and reflect on the blessing you wrote. It’s more than wax and scent, it’s a moment of mindfulness.

Cleanup Tip: Wipe out warm wax with a paper towel before washing with hot, soapy water. For stubborn spots, reheat and wipe again.
