DIY Toilet Cleaner Tablets Recipe
I’ve never liked the overpowering smell of commercial toilet cleaners. Most of them leave my bathroom smelling more like chemicals than clean, and I don’t love keeping harsh products around the house when I know there are simpler options that work just as well.
Plus, who likes having their toilet always BLUE? No thank you!
That’s exactly why I started making these DIY toilet cleaner tablets. They’re incredibly easy to make with just a handful of natural ingredients, they fizz away stains and odors, and they leave the bathroom smelling fresh with nothing more than lemon essential oil.
I usually keep a jar under the bathroom sink so cleaning the toilet only takes a minute! My kids LOVE using them too!

Why I Love These Homemade Toilet Cleaner Tablets
I’ve tried quite a few homemade toilet cleaners over the years, but these little tabs have become one of my favorites because they’re so convenient!
Instead of measuring ingredients every time I clean the bathroom, I already have individual tabs ready to go. Just drop one into the toilet, let it fizz, scrub, and flush.
A few other reasons I keep making these toilet tablets:
- One batch lasts several weeks for my family.
- They’re inexpensive to make!
- They help freshen the toilet between deep cleanings.
- They don’t have the overpowering chemical smell of many commercial cleaners.
- They take only a few minutes to mix together.

Why the Recipe Works
Each ingredient serves a purpose in this DIY toilet bombs recipe:
Baking soda gently scrubs away everyday buildup while helping absorb odors. It’s one of my favorite natural cleaning ingredients because it’s inexpensive and works in so many DIY cleaners.
Citric acid creates the fizzing action that helps loosen mineral deposits and grime inside the toilet bowl, making scrubbing much easier.
Cornstarch helps bind the ingredients together so the tabs hold their shape once they’ve dried.
Hydrogen peroxide provides just enough moisture to form the tabs while helping keep the mixture from becoming overly crumbly.
Lemon essential oil gives the tabs a bright, fresh scent that leaves the bathroom smelling clean. It’s my favorite 🙂
Tea tree essential oil is another favorite in natural cleaning recipes because of its cleansing properties and fresh herbal aroma.

DIY Toilet Cleaner Tablets Recipes
Makes: 6-8 tabs, depending on the size of your mold.
Ingredients
- ½ cup baking soda
- ⅛ cup citric acid
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 7 drops lemon essential oil
- 8 drops tea tree essential oil
- ½ tablespoon hydrogen peroxide
- Round silicone mold
Instructions
In a small bowl, combine the hydrogen peroxide with the lemon and tea tree essential oils. Stir gently to help disperse the oils.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the baking soda, citric acid, and cornstarch.
Slowly drizzle the liquid mixture into the dry ingredients while stirring continuously. Mix until the texture resembles damp sand and holds together when squeezed.
If the mixture is too dry, lightly mist with a little more hydrogen peroxide, one spray at a time.
Firmly press the mixture into silicone molds. Allow the tabs to dry for 24 to 48 hours, or until completely hardened.
Remove from the molds and store in an airtight container.
How to Use
Drop one toilet cleaner tab into the toilet bowl and allow it to fizz and dissolve for about five minutes.
Scrub the bowl with a toilet brush, then flush.
For regular maintenance, I like using one tab about once a week to help keep the toilet fresh between deeper cleanings.
Helpful Tips
- As long as they’re stored in an airtight container and kept away from moisture, they should last for several months.
- Add the liquid mixture slowly to avoid activating the citric acid too early.
- If the mixture becomes too wet, stir in a little extra baking soda until it reaches a damp sand consistency.
- Silicone molds usually make removing the finished tabs much easier!
- Feel free to use your choice of essential oil! I just LOVE the combo of lemon and tea tree.
