DIY Fall Wax Melts Recipe
Every fall, the second the air gets that first crispness to it, I start craving that smell. Cinnamon, something warm and woody, maybe a little citrus underneath.
I used to buy those store wax melts all season long, and honestly didn’t think twice about what was in them until I started getting more curious about what we were bringing into our home.
Once I started reading ingredient labels, I couldn’t stop. And eventually I figured out I could easily make my own DIY fall wax melts myself!
These homemade fall wax melts have become a yearly tradition now. I make a big batch in September, usually with the kids hovering nearby asking to smell everything, and the whole house ends up smelling like autumn within an hour.
If you’ve been wanting to make your own fall wax melts but felt like it was too complicated, I promise it’s really not!!
This simple fall wax melt recipe comes together fast, uses essential oils for the scent, and gives you that cozy fall fragrance without any of the mystery ingredients. Here’s exactly how to make these Autumn wax melts yourself 🙂

Benefits of Making Your Own
These aren’t just about making your home smell amazing (though they absolutely do that)! Each essential oil in this blend actually has some benefits as well:
- Cinnamon bark has been used for centuries in traditional medicine across cultures, valued for its warming, invigorating quality. When used aromatically, it creates that instantly familiar spice-forward scent that says “fall” without anything artificial.
- Clove bud is deeply warming and rich. It has a long history of use in traditional herbalism as a grounding, comforting scent, and it pairs with cinnamon in a way that rounds out the sharpness and adds real depth to your homemade fall scents.
- Sweet orange brightens the whole blend. Without it, the spice combination can get heavy. Orange lifts it and adds that cozy-but-fresh quality that makes the whole house feel welcoming. Traditionally citrus essential oils have been associated with uplifting the mood, which, in the middle of a gray November, is EXACTLY what you want.
- Cedarwood brings the woodsy base that makes this smell like a real autumn wax melt recipe and not just a candle store. It’s grounding and warm, and it gives the blend staying power. Traditionally cedarwood has been used for its calming, earthy quality, and it’s a beautiful anchor for any fall home fragrance blend. I find it so grounding and calming!!
- Soy wax is a cleaner-burning base compared to paraffin, which is part of why I like using it for DIY wax melts with essential oils. It holds scent well and releases it slowly when warmed.

DIY Fall Wax Melts Recipe
Makes: 19-20 melts if using the same mold
Ingredients
- 1 cup soy wax
- 2-3 drops candle dye
- 100 drops Pumpkin Spice essential oil blend (If you don’t have this, skip to notes where I create my own blend)
- Fall silicone mold

Instructions
Melt the soy wax in a double boiler until fully melted.

Once melted, divide the wax evenly between 4 containers if you want 4 colors.
Stir in your candle dye, a drop at a time, until you reach the color you love in each container.

Let the wax cool slightly, around 120-130°F. This keeps the essential oil scent from burning off. Then stir in your essential oil blend.

Pour the melted wax into your silicone mold.

Let the wax melts cool and harden completely at room temperature (this usually takes an hour or two).

Pop them out of the mold once fully set and store in an airtight container until you’re ready to use them in your wax warmer!

Notes
- Adding essential oils too hot can burn off the scent, so waiting until the wax cools slightly helps the fragrance last once cured.
- If you don’t have the specific blend I mentioned above, you can make your own fall scent by doing these: 30 drops cinnamon bark essential oil, 30 drops clove bud essential oil, 20 drops sweet orange essential oil, 20 drops cedarwood essential oil.
- Use 4-6 per wax melter.

How to Use It
Place 4-6 melts into your wax warmer at a time. The scent will fill a room pretty quickly, and you’ll get several hours of fragrance from each use.
Once the scent fades, the wax can usually be rewarmed a couple more times before you’d want to replace it.
Store your autumn scented melts in an airtight container away from heat and direct sunlight. They’ll keep for months this way, which makes them great for gifting or stocking up in October for the whole season.
Cinnamon bark and clove bud are strong essential oils, so keep the warmer in a well-ventilated space and avoid using these in rooms where very young babies spend most of their time.
