DIY Stainless Steel Spray Recipe That’s Fingerprint Resistant

Stainless steel looks so sleek and beautiful, especially on a stainless steel fridge, but keeping it that way can feel like a full-time job, especially with little ones. Between little hands, cooking splatters, and everyday life, cleaning stainless steel becomes one of those chores we repeat over and over again.
When we got new stainless steel appliances, it was such a struggle finding something that didn’t have chemicals but worked great for getting those fingerprint and grime off. Thankfully I was able to create a DIY stainless steel spray that WORKS and is actually fingerprint resistant too!
Today I’m sharing my favorite homemade stainless steel cleaner recipe that is simple, effective, and completely doable with ingredients you probably already have at home 🙂

Ingredients I Used
Even though this isn’t a medicinal herbal remedy, I still love understanding what each ingredient does and why it works:
White Vinegar
Vinegar helps cut grease and break down residue. It’s one of the best ways to clean stainless steel because it dissolves buildup without scratching the surface.
Rubbing Alcohol
Alcohol helps the spray evaporate quickly, which is key for streak free stainless steel appliances. It also boosts cleaning power and helps sanitize.
Vegetable Glycerin
Glycerin adds just a touch of smoothness, helping the spray glide and reducing streaking. It also helps with keeping it fingerprint resistant for the future.
Olive Oil
Just a tiny amount works as a DIY stainless steel polish, adding shine and helping create that fingerprint resistant finish.
Lemon or Orange Essential Oil (Optional)
These oils add a fresh scent and extra grease cutting ability. Citrus oils are wonderful in natural cleaning recipes because they naturally help break down oils.
Safety notes: Always test any DIY stainless steel cleaner on a small, hidden area first. Avoid oversaturating surfaces. Do not use on unfinished or specialty coated metals.

DIY Fingerprint Resistant Stainless Steel Spray Recipe
This DIY stainless steel cleaner recipe will make about 8 ounces in total.
Ingredients
6 tablespoons distilled water
2 tablespoons white vinegar
2 teaspoons rubbing alcohol (70% or higher)
⅛ teaspoon vegetable glycerin
⅛ teaspoon olive oil
3–5 drops lemon or orange essential oil (optional)
Instructions
Add the distilled water and white vinegar to a clean 8 oz spray bottle.
Add the rubbing alcohol and vegetable glycerin.
If using, add the essential oil to the olive oil and then add to the bottle.
Cap and shake well to combine.
Top off with distilled water if needed to reach the full 8 oz.
Shake before each use.
How to Use
Lightly spray onto stainless steel surfaces and wipe with a soft microfiber cloth, following the grain of the metal for best results. This is truly the best way to clean stainless steel without streaks.
Just make sure to spray light little sprays and then wipe. Spraying too much doesn’t work as good, trust me, I figured that out the hard way!
Notes
- Shelf Life: Approximately 3 to 6 months when stored properly.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Shake before use since natural ingredients may separate.
- Test on a small area first.
- Avoid over spraying to prevent streaking.
