DIY Herbal Cough Syrup

One day my daughter started coughing just as I was winding down for the night. You know the kind: deep, dry, and persistent.

We’d had a long day, and the last thing I wanted was another run to the store or an endless internet scroll of remedies filled with synthetic ingredients I couldn’t pronounce.

So, I turned to what I had on hand: dried herbs, raw honey, and lemon. Within the hour, I had a warm jar of herbal cough syrup cooling on the counter.

She took a spoonful before bed, and while it wasn’t a miracle cure, it helped soothe her throat enough for both of us to get a good night’s rest.

I always get a persistent cough ever since I was a child and it is so hard to kick. My daughter unfortunately takes after me in that category. I have been trying FOREVER to find something that actually works to take that cough away. And this stuff works.

Making your own DIY herbal cough syrup is one of the simplest, most empowering ways to care for your family naturally. Here’s how to do it, and why these herbs that I used actually help.

This cough syrup paired with our herbal cough drops was exactly what we needed to heal and recover.

Herbal Benefits

This gentle syrup brings together some of my favorite herbs for respiratory relief and immune support:

Ginger: Warming and stimulating, ginger helps break up chest congestion and soothes inflammation in the throat. It also has mild antimicrobial properties.

Chamomile flowers: Known for their calming effect, chamomile is especially helpful if coughing is interrupting sleep. It’s also soothing to inflamed tissues.

Marshmallow root: This one is a true soother. Marshmallow coats the throat and calms irritation with its mucilaginous (gel-like) quality. Perfect for dry, scratchy coughs.

I can’t live without marshmallow root, it is my favorite!

Cinnamon: Besides adding a lovely flavor, cinnamon is warming and antimicrobial, helping to support immune function.

Lemon juice: Adds a touch of vitamin C and a bright, tangy flavor that also helps cut through mucus.

Raw honey: Nature’s original cough soother. Honey coats the throat, reduces coughing, and adds natural sweetness.

Note: never give honey to babies under 1 year old!

DIY Herbal Cough Syrup Recipe

Here is how I made this healing homemade cough syrup using herbs:

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine water and herbs (everything except the lemon juice and honey).
  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until the liquid reduces by about half (you should have around 1 cup left).
  3. Strain out the herbs using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth.
  4. While the liquid is still warm, stir in the lemon juice and honey until well combined.
  5. Pour into a clean glass jar and store in the fridge.

To Use: Give children 1 teaspoon and adults 1 tablespoon as needed to ease coughs or sore throats.

My kids absolutely love it and beg for more!

Notes

  • This will last about 2 months in the fridge. I like to freeze the leftover when we are all feeling better so it will last much longer! Then I just let it defrost when we need it once again so it never goes to waste.

A Personal Note on Using This Syrup

This syrup is now a staple in our home during cold season. I’ve shared it with friends, neighbors, and family!

I love that I can whip it up with herbs I already keep stocked, and that I know exactly what’s going into my family’s bodies.
