Homemade Vanilla Sugar

If you’ve never made vanilla sugar before, get ready for your kitchen to smell heavenly! This two-ingredient homemade vanilla sugar recipe is one of the easiest herbal pantry projects you can try, and trust me, once you try it, you will always have a jar at home!

My daughter absolutely love vanilla bean sugar. She uses it in her oatmeal and won’t take anything else. She has to smell the jar every time we open it, and sometimes just for fun!

Sprinkle it on muffins, stir it into tea, use it in baking, or gift it in a little jar with a bow. Once you make it, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.

Here is my super simple DIY vanilla sugar recipe:

Jar of vanilla sugar with a whole vanilla bean inside and vanilla pods beside it.

Why Vanilla?

Vanilla is more than just a dessert flavor, it’s rich, warming, and emotionally comforting. Just the scent alone has been shown to ease anxiety and create a calming effect (which is why it’s often used in candles and perfumes).

Makes so much sense why it is my favorite smell in the world!

Infusing vanilla into sugar lets you enjoy its sweet aroma in an everyday way, whether you’re baking cookies or sweetening your morning cup of herbal tea.

Ingredients:

Vanilla Sugar ingredients vanilla beans, sugar

How To Make Vanilla Sugar

  1. Slice open the vanilla beans lengthwise to expose the caviar (those tiny black seeds inside).
  1. Then cut the beans in half so they fit easily into your jar. Add the vanilla beans and caviar to your sugar.
  1. Pour everything into a clean glass jar and seal tightly. Give the jar a good shake to distribute the caviar throughout the sugar.
  2. Let it sit for at least a few days before using, the longer it infuses, the richer the flavor.

Notes:

  • You can leave the vanilla beans in the sugar indefinitely. Just top it off with more sugar when you start to run low!
  • Want a stronger vanilla flavor faster? Add a spoonful of vanilla powder for an extra boost.
  • Makes for a great homemade gift, just add a tag and a ribbon!
