Homemade Vanilla Bean Paste

Vanilla paste is one of those secret ingredients that takes any recipe from “good” to wow! It’s thick, syrupy, and full of real vanilla bean specks, giving baked goods, frostings, and warm drinks a deep, complex flavor that vanilla extract alone just can’t match.

And the best part? You can make it yourself, with just three ingredients and a blender!

This homemade vanilla bean paste is perfect for anyone who loves using vanilla in their baking.

After I made my own vanilla extract, I didn’t want the beans to go to waste. I was shocked when I found out how easy it was to make my own vanilla bean paste!

Once I tasted how incredible it made my cookies, muffins, and all baking, I knew I always had to keep a jar at home.

Here is my super simple beginner-friendly homemade vanilla bean paste recipe!

Why Make Vanilla Paste?

Store-bought vanilla paste can be expensive and sometimes contains thickeners or extra sweeteners.

This version keeps it simple with real vanilla beans, glycerin (as a natural, food-safe base), and a splash of vanilla extract to round out the flavor.

It’s thicker than extract, but just right for spooning into your favorite recipes!

Homemade Vanilla Bean Paste Recipe

This makes 6-8 ounces:

Ingredients:

Vanilla Paste ingredients glycerin, vanilla extract, vanilla beans

How To Make Vanilla Paste

  1. Chop your vanilla beans into small pieces. If you’re using beans from a vanilla extract batch, they’ll be softer and easier to blend. If using fresh beans, slice them into small chunks.
  1. Add the beans, glycerin, and vanilla extract to a food processor or high-speed blender.
  1. Blend until you get a smooth, dark paste. It should be thick but pourable, not dry or overly runny.
  1. Scoop into a sterilized glass jar with a lid and store in the refrigerator.

Notes:

  • You can use fresh beans or reuse beans from a finished batch of vanilla extract, nothing goes to waste!
  • Store in the fridge and use within 6 months for best quality.
  • If the paste thickens over time, just stir it or add a touch more glycerin.
  • This makes a wonderful homemade gift for friends, just add a cute label and tie with twine.
